    Difficulty shooting with reflex sight...

I put on a Vortex Venom on my G34 using a dovetail mount. I cant seem to get myself to use it right.

I zeroed it at 15 yards. I can shoot a group less than one inch in diamter on a pistol rest. Off hand, grouping is all over the place. From bullseye to 8 inches low.

7 yards, its a 10 inch group. Comparing it to my G19 with iron sights, shooting it side by side, Im grouping with iron sights tightly around the bullseye.

I competed in a USPSA match. On two 35 yards targets, I hit one 6 out of 6, then on the second string, I didnt hit it at all.

With close up targets from 10-15 yards, Id hit some all A zone, then I'd totally miss some as well.

On the last stage, shooting steel plates at 7 yards, I couldnt hit the first plate, someone called out "low by foot". I held over by a foot and hit it. Then proceeded to use the hold over to put down the rest of the plates in short order.

I spoke to another competitor, he said its taken him more than a 1 month to learn to use a reflex red dot. On the first few outings, he actually wanted to strip it off, then slowly grew into it. That depending on the distance, he's had to learn holdovers and co-witnessing the dot with the front blade to make sure he had "presented" the dot the right way so he can hit stuff.

I dont have a front blade, I took all the sights off. I cant blame the sight, it groups well on a pistol rest. Any chance the dot goes out of zero intermitently?

Any advise on what Im doing wrong? I have a Primary Arm micro red dot on another gun. That one is not a reflex unit. I am supernaturally good with it.

    Perhaps it is moving around?

    Check the mount.

    Also there is this.
Whether you are in combat, competition, or hunting dangerous game, red dots sights can allow you to use your skill to the greatest potential.

No idea unless you're forgetting your trigger discipline in all the excitement. I have Trijicon RMR sights on several Glocks and other reflex sights on several range pistols, and they perform fantastically. I do use the front sight to get my eye on the dot if I'm in a hurry.

You can also use the reflex as a sort of giant ghost ring.

I had a old no brand red dot and the floated around a lot.

              Could be a bad unit.

i love mine, i also hate dots and went with a triangle. for me it helps me target better since if im close i just use the massive triangle but longer shots i use the tip of the triangle where i sighted it in.

If it were me i would make sure everything is tight and test it again, if its still a problem can you mount it on a rifle? if so mount on rifle and test to see if the optic may just be a bad apple.

Ill do this. I'm very close to ripping it off and going back to irons.

                      You have several incompatible symptoms.

Normally, loose groups are indication of poor trigger control (slow fire), or a combination of trigger and grip issues (faster fire). This would also be consistent with your bench shooting eliminating red dot movement.

However, if you used a holdover of around a foot and then managed to hit targets after that, it would indicate problem with the mounting, or even with the sight itself - might be defective (except, it works on the bench).

At this time, I would let someone else shoot it to eliminate any potential issue with the sight itself.

Separately, shooting your irons better initially is typical. You are concentrating much more when shooting irons and red dot feels like cheating. Except it will make you miss if you don't press the trigger correctly the same way any other gun will.

If you put the front sight on can you see it through the re dot? If you can I'm wondering if you had the front sight as a point of reference it would help. I had a CZ75 with a Docter red dot and and had a hard time with it. I couldn't see the front sight and I was searching for the dot a lot because I had nothing to reference on.

^^^ yup, can't figure it out. The first match I used it on, I was burning through stages 123. By stage 4, I couldn't hit ****. Then started holding over, and finished the match.

I then brought it to an indoor range with the pistol rest. Adjusted the elevation a bit. It shot well on the gun rest, not so well offhand, but after messing with the adjustment locks a bit, it shot ok. Then I brought it to yesterday's match.

Man, this is driving me nuts.

Any sign of keyhole when punching through paper? It could be the ammo.

Shooting 124 HPs with 5.1gr of WSF powder. 1167ish fps, 144 PF. No keyholing evident.

Same ammo shoots 1 inch groups on my 9mm carbine at 25 yards.
