NOTE: A quick way to inventory your guns (like say before you go on vacation) is to take them out of your safe, and use your phone or camcorder to quickly take a video of them all lying there. You can then also pick each one off and say the serial number of them. If you need it, then all that info is available. Like if you come home and everythings gone, and that video is on your phone, you can use it to inform the police and/or insurance. and have proof that you owned it.

Forget about stopping power. If you can't hit it, you can't stop it.

That's probably not a bad idea. I was once told to go through my entire house with a video recorder and video anything of value. When the house burns down or somehow your stuff gets destroyed, you really have no idea as to what you had. It's difficult to prove that you HAD something when it's gone. I mean, how many of us have receipts for All of our valuables. Stuff you were gifted or have had for 20 years? When you are filling out insurance papers, you forget a lot of stuff.NOTE: A quick way to inventory your guns (like say before you go on vacation) is to take them out of your safe, and use your phone or camcorder to quickly take a video of them all lying there. Thank you for the replies so far, but those of you that think that you still have some privacy are not paying that close attention.
You have little to fear from the government and a lot to fear from big business. Every time you buy cleaning supplies with a credit card, join a pro gun group, but a gun, buy ammo, post about guns or any other activity, pay for gun show tickets online, it's recorded somewhere. I know that sounds paranoid, but in this day and age, information is a commodity and you can bets its all being collected and used.
Privacy is pretty much history.
I'm still trying to maintain mine, but it's a losing battle.Comment

I use an IOS app called "Gun Log SPC" which backs up data to iCloud. I also use the "take a random pic/video" method because those are automatically and immediately backed up to iCloud, my desktop backup disks, as well as an offsite backup service.
It's important to think through how you're going to retrieve the data when you've been burglarized or had to abandon your home in a disaster and return to a mess. You might not have any way to access all that hard copy or non-internet stored spreadsheet data, making it useless. Backups or don't waste your time.

I use emacs to track mine.
That plus rsync gives me a good backup of my inventory with the security of knowing it only goes where I tell it to go.
It's also nice knowing that the editor won't ever becomes obsolete, since emacs has been in active development since 1976.Comment
