I am looking into buying my first handgun, but have had experience handling and shooting both a Glock 23 and an XD in the .40. For me, there wasn't a huge functional difference or anything that stood out to me to separate the two, so a big deal breaker for me is finding either for the right price. Any opinions on pro's or con's on either?

Glock 23 vs. XD40??

Pick them both up and see what feels better in your hands.
Both are great guns I liked the xd myself."I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it." - Thomas Jefferson -
I was in the same dilemma when choosing my first handgun.
I had handled and shot both and was leaning towards the G23.
But then a good deal came around on an XD40... so I picked it up.
Now after owning the XD, I would definitely recommend it over the G23.
Personally, I like the feel and weight distribution of the XDs over the Glocks.just my 2

I'm a glock fan but will admit that the xd does feel better in the hand although the reach is a little short IMO. I very much dislike the web safety. I think I dislike the thought of it more then the actual feeling of it on my hand. My next pistol will be a XD in 45. I already own a few glocks and two of them are on my nightstand

I sold my XD40 and now have a Glock 23. My reasons were that the XD40 was a bit bulkier and slightly larger than the G23 though it had a much better grip.
I trigger on the XD40 is smoother but is long compared to the crisp break of the Glock.
I also got the Glock for a great deal but I shot the XD40 more naturally compared to needing to practice with the Glock.Comment

Your question:

My answer:

just trying to show off my girls. But seriously, the easiest way is to rent both and see which one can punch holes on target the best. Beside that, see what matter to you the most:
Price - XD usually can be found cheaper than Glock, yet the resell price are about the same.
Availability - I believe there is still a Glock drought out there, though I just recently find a used G23 in great shape and great deal.
OEM and mod parts - Parts will be much easier to find and order online for Glock. I even get some free parts from folks from GlockTalk forum just by asking around.
Features - I dislike the safeties on XD, and the high bore. But they are others who enjoy those features, so it's up to you to decide.Taiwan born, Chinese descent, red white and freaking blue America citizen.
Gun Control - A theory espoused by some monumentally stupid people; who claim to believe, against all logic and common sense, that a violent predator who ignores the laws prohibiting them from robbing, raping, kidnapping, torturing and killing their fellow human beings will obey a law telling them that they cannot own a gun.Comment

I say get the XD40. I actually was looking at getting the G23 but I'm so partial to the XD40 I'm going to pick up another one soon.
Here's mine...much sexier than the G23 I must say.

+1 for the Glock Four-tay!Comment

I say the get the XD. I have a XD45 and a XD9 subcompact on the way. Yes, I am a little bias.Comment

Apples and oranges, but I had a G17 and sold it because it didn't fit me well. I still have an XD9 subcompact that's a lot more comfortable for me than Glocks.
YMMV, as always. Put 50 rounds through each, trading off 10 rounds at a time, and your choice will be pretty clear, I'd bet.sigpic

Glock is the forerunner when it comes to the [now] ubiquitous polymer pistol (well, if you can find one these days).
The Glock trigger breaks crisper than the XD after cycling. Try it and see for yourself... dry fire the XD and while holding the trigger back cycle the slide i.e. cock it while trigger is depressed, then once cycle is complete let the trigger out slow... feel the 'long' break on that XD? Now try the Glock... feel the 'crisp' break? That my friend is the difference between Glock and XD.
Now... you wand a Springfield? Go get a 1911!
You don't see Glock copy the 1911 do you? Nope! Springfield makes 1911's.
Want a Polymer Pistol? Get a Glock!
I love it when someone says, I cant hit anything with that darn Glock... I instruct this method of firing and I'll be darn if they don't become a Glock believer immediately after live fire using this method. Using this feature on the Glock will improve your accuracy.
I have owned Springfield 1911, and I have Kimber [1911] Ultra CDPII (my carry gun), and I will own a Dan Wesson CBOB if I can find one!
I will never trade my Glock 36 for a XD, nope! If I want a Springfield, I'll get a 1911... hey, when you go to a steakhouse, ya get steak not fish!
When you get a Polymer, you get a Glock not Springfield!
It's okay, you don't have to agree... just my opinion on this. "Thanks".

+1 on renting them and trying them out.
each feels different in the hand, and shoots differently. The Glocks' barrel sits lower and closer to the hand for better followup shots and is nice and easy to shoot.
The XD grip feels great in my hand (haven't shot them enough to know how consistant i am) It is definitly top heavy in comparison.
If shooting doesn't matter...go for looks. It is all opinion for most of us. If it came down to which we'd take into war...don't ask me...ask someone who serves the country when we are at war.
If you take care of them both, i'm sure they'd both serve well as home defense and for whatever. (luckily i haven't had to run into that situation either)
good luck with the purchase.
oh yeah...my first handgun was a Kimber 1911 not polymer
but that is just my opinion too!

XD40, it's a great gun! Everyone who has tried mine has shot it better than their own gun
