I realize you're trying to be a good dad, but presumably the only time you would ever use a gun is if your life/family were under imminent threat of being injured or killed. If that were the case then an infant with hearing injury is better off than a kidnapped/molested/mauled/killed infant.

That said, stay away from magnum rounds (357 and .22 mag are really loud!). A .38 special with a 4 or 6" barrel would be a great choice. If you reload load up some 148gr lead wadcutters with 2.8 gr of Bullseye powder. Not a powerhouse round by any means but it is accurate and very quiet. I have shot them around my ranch with no hearing protection and they are easier on bare ears than a .22 LR.

Quiet .22 works great, but won't cycle the action of any semi I've tried it in. You'd have to go revolver.
Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.

        1) don't sleep with windows open; in another thread, burglars target windows (bathroom/bedroom) that are open. Neighbors of ours have reported being broken into at 3am by their bathroom window (yes, someone can fit through it).
        2) don't get a new big dog or any dog, unless you go through the steps of making them know who's the boss. Having a dog of even 30lbs, around a newborn, can have tragic consequences if the owner doesn't properly prepare themselves and train the dog to be good around newborns and children. If you are determined to get a dog, know it is a commitment. Training and regular walks, visits to the pet vet, all part of it. But they are the best companions.
        3) when you guys tuck in at night, keep the car keys with you. If you have any need to alert your neighbors of a breakin or attempts to knock in a door/window, you can set off the car alarm to alert neighbors while calling 911. This is good and free
        4) if you can get an alarm system (simplisafe, frontpoint) that helps. Don't need to do heavy duty installing, e.g. Drilling
        5) if you do own your place, set up security motion lights at your front door or driveway. It'll help deter walk by thieves looking for a quick score, then following up for more.

Lastly if you must use a firearm in self defense, between your wife and you, come up with a plan for a safe room (e.g. Master bedroom closet or bathroom). Maybe plan between you two to only discharge the firearm outside of that room while they are safely inside it.

IMO if you have to use it, sound effect should be the last thing you think about. Plus babies ears aren't fully developed until almost 2yo.

Protect your family, stop the perp, train with what you have or new that you are going to get. let the wife get familiar with it or have a separate nightstand gun on her side of the bed, one she is most comfortable with. Have a plan.

Thanks a lot all of you, yes even you, Lol.

Have taken in consideration all preventive suggestions, steps to take.
I will have to use something other than a firearm, in my case I'm living in an apartment complex, which changes things, will keep my " tools" closer now.

I think any firearm discharged in the room will be to agresively loud for the baby or to low of a stoping power to even try.

but same reemerging question, what gun for my wife if I'm not home?
Now a long barreled 22 rifle comes to mind (not tactical I know).

Low stopping power vs loudness... That's the equation apparently.

Get a .22LR handgun - low recoil for her, and the noise won't be an issue when her adrenaline is rushing through her body.

Yes, in case of life or death only, otherwise I would defenetly not even think of discharging a firearm at home ...
30+ years ago when we had the crib in our room. Browning High Power because that was my EDC.

If you are in a situation where you have to deploy lethal force, it is what it is. Worry about the small stuff later. You and your family needs to survive first. Everything else is secondary.

Yes it will be loud no matter what. Have you purchase some sort of rapid access safe? I see that as a bigger risk.
RIP Louis Awerbuck. I miss you and your training.

Use whatever you have now. Better to use a man stopper than a .22 or similar and have the guy continue the attack.

Why not have a silencer on your bedside weapon and remove it after shooting the perp?
Yeah, why not break federal law as well as state law and rely on remembering to partially disassemble your defensive weapon while police are coming to your house.

That's the dumbest thing I've read all day, and you said it on a public forum.

More ignorant pit bull comments. You figure the way the antigunners try to nail us with stupid myths and misconceptions that some of us would be weary of such crap.
