    Newborn in proximity

I have always had a gun in my bedroom, now that I have a newborn I start to question if anyone recomends a specific caliber and type of firearm if any in the extreme case one had to be fired in the same room.

Yes, in case of life or death only, otherwise I would defenetly not even think of discharging a firearm at home.

Remember no silencers here (Ca.) and yes, after calling 911 if any smart a. mentions it.

Certain type of gun or no gun at all?

    Revolver 38 spl with pillow/wrap arround ?

I do not want to come off as a smart as or a dumb as but the first thing that came to my mind was some baby sized ear pro. That might open up your options. I mean hypothetically, if you got time to call the fuzz, you should have time to put on some electronic ear pro on yourself and some muffs and or plugs on the little guy.

Pretty much anything you would consider using for defense would be very loud if shot indoors. Hopefully it does not ever come to that, especially if your baby is in the room. I still think I would rather have one than not, kept in a safe location of course. If your baby is newborn, I don't think you really have much to worry about as far them getting ahold of it, but I would invest in a safe or some sort of quick access vault if you haven't already. Kids are too dang smart and ingenuitive.

I don't think using a pillow as an impromptu silencer is going to do much.

CCI 22LR quiet. Not too effective against heavy clothing. Weapon light laser combo, only head shots count. Second choice snake shot to the face is discouraging.

What about forming a plan with your lady, that has her securing the little one? This could include having her protect his hearing (and everything else).

Sleep with the windows open to dissipate the sound.

Chances are you will never need to use it and if you ever do, pony up for hearing aids. It's almost a non issue but go with the wife covers ears if it helps you sleep at night or perhaps have a plan that both of them retreat to a particular point in the room while you are in front and facing the entry point. Little one will cost you all the stress now and then go to concerts every weekend during and after high school! Good thing you don't pack the shotgun for the job.

                    ?
                    A handgun with 38 S&W bullets is lower dB than a 9mm.
Another louder choice is a 380ACP.

Why not have a silencer on your bedside weapon and remove it after shooting the perp?

Well I have an alarm, a lap dog that barks at anyone in close proximity to the house, a wife who's a light sleeper, and all the bedrooms on the 2nd floor with no access to the windows without using a ladder. My usual go plan for things-that-go-bump in the night is to grab my pistol and ears and head out through my bedroom door while closing it behind me. We have a safe word/phrase that I use if everything is in the clear before I go back into the room. That should help my situation out as far as keeping the wife and kid's hearing safe (my infant and toddler still sleep with us). Eventually my wife will be armed so the hearing protection for the kiddies might be an issue. I know they have Ears for toddlers (my buddy has a set for his kid when they bring him to stadium events). Not too sure about infants, especially newborns

It sounds like your best option is preventative, ie alarms or a dog to bark (please don't train your dog to attack, it makes them terrible pets in most cases). If it still comes down to you having to use your firearm, have your wife (assumption that she is still there) take the baby into the closet. This will give them a barrier for the sound. Yes, it will still be loud. But not as loud.

Subsonic .22lr would probably be quietest. Still loud for indoor, but likely quieter than anything else.

Putting a pillow over the gun will prevent you from actually aiming at your target. Bad idea. Also consider that after a shooting the detectives will be looking at everything you did and what was used. Don't over think this.

Again, if hearing concerns are weighing in heavier than anything else, go for subsonic .22lr.

Oh it will do something. It'll send pillow stuffing all over the room, possibly make you miss your shot/shots since you've never trained to shoot like that before, you may shoot your own hand because you know... stupid. You might make the perp laugh and surrender for being such a noob.

                              Stuff will happen for sure.
