My opinion is to clean it before hand - mostly I'm concerned with getting any oil/grease out of barrel. That said, I read many magazine reviews where the writer takes it right from the box to the range.

Almost always, a FTE is a result of not having a solid grip on the gun. There is no published break-in, but like anything mechanical, it will smooth out over time. Make sure you have a solid grip, and make sure your hand isn't somehow interfering with the operation of the slide.

You can run into more problems with JHP; if you have some FMJ give that a try.

You didn't clean and lube it up?

Well there's your first problem. Clean it, lube it, and put a few 100 rounds down the pipe. Then get back to us.
If you want change you have to put in your 2 cents, you can't just sit on the sidelines and whine.

Clear the malfunction and keep shooting.

It will only get better with time.

        Possible you limp wristed it?

Anticipation of your first shot I am sure.

Clean it up a little, add tiny lube and keep a solid grip till you get comfortable with it then adjust as you see fit.

Check your magazine follower. If it's marked 2183, that could be the culprit.

First thing I do with a new glock is clean out that copper compound inside and lube it up. Never let me down

I took my glock out before cleaning when it was new a it ran bad. FTF, FTE and brass in my face. Before I shot it I took it apart and it looked ok. After a good cleaning and lube it ran the next 150 rounds great and was dirty when I was done shooting than the first time and it was still running great. Clean and lube it and give it another go.

So how did the 2nd round go? And the 3rd? and the 50th?

                    Seriously

As to suggestions, no Glock should have to be cleaned and lubed out of the box. The copper lube should be left alone. They will run dry as a bone with no lube at all, dirty as ****. FTE was caused by limp wrist or possibly bad mag follower.

Should have kept shooting, accurate suggestions cannot be made from a sample of 1.

Should I be using different ammo? Should I have cleaned this first? Is there or is there not a break in period on a Glock?
Yes, clean it but read the manual first.

I got my Glock 19 Gen 3 for Fathers Day. So about 1200 rounds downrange. I am using that same load, Winchester 147 JHP from Walmart at $21.77/box. I got 3 boxes and I shot a whole box after I got it broken in with about 400 rounds of Federal aluminum case that I got at Walmart for $9.97.

Great choice in handgun and self defense ammunition. Stay safe my friend
