You can get into a brand new Sig P2022 for < $600 from your LGS, and still have some cash left over for a couple extra mags. It comes with a holster too to get you started.

If you already have a polymer semi auto, I'd suggest a steel framed pistol like an Armscor 1911 or move up with the big boys and get yourself a .357 - no sense in buying another 9mm that goes 'pew' in a slightly different way.

Find a Ruger GP100 on sale or shop around for a used, nice condition 357 Revolver. It will become your favorite range gun.

Since you don't go into any detail about what characteristics you seek, I'll suggest the S&W M&P Shield 9mm.
The size of your hands may be a factor you didn't mention. If your grip is comfortable on this sub-compact gun, it's a nice alternative (size-wise) to a Compact or Full-size 9mm.
The XD is a fantastic gun (it's on my long want-list), but my first choice was the Beretta 92FS. Now that I have that big, heavy range-use sweetheart, the Shield is next.
BTW I know this b/c I followed the advice some here have given: go to a range that rents handguns and feel for yourself. That's also how I decided on the 92FS.

                      Some charge per gun.

                      Get a .357 revolver.
Ruger GP 100, Smith 686/686+, or similar.
I agree on both points here. There are many options; the "two is one" camp, diversify, go "off roster", etc. Research is half the fun

In my experience, S&W handguns seem to get a premium price so don't overlook the Ruger SP101. It's easily within your price range.

Thanks every1 for the input. Sorry for not replying sooned but my kids sure keep me busy. Let me clear things up. Im looking for a full size. Hopefully something different then a 9mm. But im still open to the 9mm. Im trying to stay at or under 600 as i dont shoot much and it will just sit in my safe. What are ue guys feed back on the RIA 1911? They seem in my price range

                              ^ Was going to suggest the S&W 686... but also consider a used 617 10-shot .22LR (?).

The pair weigh the same and they share grips, holsters, etc.
The 617 makes a great target / rimfire steel challenge / falling plates gun for you... if you like a little competition on the cheap,
as well as a great trainer for the 686 and it's a great way to bring them into the sport.

Kidding aside, a S&W 617 would be an excellent addition to your safe. May not be in your budget, but keep an eye out. Great guns, and really fun to shoot. Everyone should have a .22 handgun.
