I'll always recommend a Beretta 92FS. It's a great shooter and an example of what pistols used to be like before the Tupperware guns came on scene. Certainly not a carry gun and you could debate it's weight and heft. But it's still a classic.Comment

Be sure to ask your doctor if depression, rectal bleeding, and suicide are right for you.

CZ75, Ruger GP100 Revolver, and Rock Island Tactical are all good choices. Each is very different. Your question is really too broad. You should tell us a little more about what you are looking for; Bigger or smaller? What caliber? semi-Auto or revolver? Polymer or Steel?... these are just a few questions. we could ask many more.
Good luck.

There are some nice Ruger revolvers to be had for that price range.
Check the Turners ads . . . they sometimes have some reasonably cheap 1911's of various brands.sigpicComment

Another vote for the Beretta Px4, the design itself is pretty interesting and the felt recoil is pretty mild, making it a very nice shooter.Comment

The 1st top drawer choice for -$1,000 pistol that should remain a top drawer pistol for the next 25 years or so is a unaltered Beretta 92F in 9mm.
Frame integrity and Parts, Factory Beretta parts..., should be available to keep a spaghetti gun running smooth long after you cannot.Comment

This.
Make sure you buy something that you like and can shoot well. You could like a gun but then can't shoot it well. The reverse is also true. You my not like something but end up being a marksman with it.Comment

Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'
