1911 purchase question

At that price point, I'd look for a good used Colt or Les Baer.

The Colt has the trademark advantage, and the quality control never dropped below a reasonable threshold, however there was a lot a variance in the quality control over the past 10 years. Commonly found flaws are the milling of the dust cover and the bushing bore. The affected weapons will still shoot well, they just look kinda funky.

IMHO, Les Baer is the top of the other makers. His quality control is outstanding and there are enough Baer models to suit just about any taste. His products have a blessed absence of "eye candy." They just shoot real well. One of Baer's trademarks is that he builds his guns obnoxiously tight. Just be prepared for it. His frame design differs slightly from Browning's 1911 design, but I kinda like Baer's version a little better.

In that price range I would recommend a Dan Wesson RZ-45 Heritage. GREAT pistol.

If you can spend a little bit more, get a Les Baer, hands down.

Front strap checkering, bull barrel, magwell, adjustable rear sight, no weird (for my taste) green/black two tone

Bull barrel is only on the railed versions, btw I am looking for the non railed version for just this reason.

I was spoiled in getting a full rail TRP as my first 1911. In the market for a non-railed version. Initially I was looking at either the TRP or a DW PM7. The Les Baer does look like a sweet deal, just want to handle one up close before making the purchase.

I have a DW, Baer and TRP....

I found a solid deal on a SS DW Specialist a few years back and it is every bit as good if not better than the TRP IMHO. It just depends what deal you can find and the look you want. I am a sucker for railed 1911's and I love the look of the full rail TRP(but she is a heavy beast).

I know all these are a touch high for your range but I would save even more and get a Baer if I could only have one. You would be happy with any one of these though!

I handled a few today and in my opinion they are all that! Writing the check for a Custom Carry tomorrow. For $400 more than a TRP, there is no comparison.

Plenty of good suggestions posted here though - TRP is probably nicer than the Colt.
