    Springfield 9mm 1911 Availability

Last week I ran into a guy at the range who was practicing with a few of his steel targets doing some moving drills. I had a few steel targets of my own next to him so we started talking.

Turns out he's done USPSA in the past and was practicing for the single stack division with a 9mm 1911. It was a very nice Kimber. I've never shot in a match so I was eager to get some additional information and we even ended up doing a few drills with the shot timer and alike.

During the shooting, we tried each other's guns and I realized that I really liked the concept of a 9mm 1911 (the only 1911 in 9mm that I own is a subcompact EMP), but I wasn't even aware that there were a few on the roster. That was the good news. I went home and did a quick search of the roster, then checked out the inventory. I could find Kimbers in stock, but not SA (the only other one). That was the bad news.

Now, I don't like my choice to be based solely on availability so I would like to find out a bit more about SA availability. How long has this drought been going on and are there any expectations that SA will produce a batch in the near future? In the past, there were guns that I waited for a year or longer, then there were guns that I waited for several years and never got one. Is that where we are with the SA 1911?

I bought one about a year ago that was in stock at the range where I'm a member. I had it worked on as it's an IDPA ESP gun and I liked it so much, I bought a 2nd one and made it a backup.

You'll just need to keep looking. I was looking for a couple of months before I found the 2nd one. if you know of a couple of good LGS, ask them if they have one on order and then see if they'll call you when it comes in.

It takes a while if you want a Springer. Kimbers seem to be more available but I wanted a series 70. You might want to try the buy/sell forum as 9mm 1911's do go for sale there.

    Good luck.

The Springfield 1911 in 9mm was supposedly discontinued, but I still see them around - Guns, Fishing & Stuff has them and so does River City Gun Exchange, last time I looked was 2 weeks back. I got mine from River City last year. Nice gun, very comfortable to shoot and excellent sights. Lousy trigger out of the box but cleans up nicely.

Ask Baboosh, AudioPhil and EBRWorks, all three are able to get a hold of guns that often are out of stock everywhere else. You are going to pay a premium and extra charges but that's par for the course when you want a hard to get gun.

There is a match at Pala this Saturday. Come out and give USPSA a try.

YOu can also (I think) still get an RIA in .38 Super and drop in a 9mm barrel and extractor or ejector or something. However, it has the GI sights.

They are still made in batches for the CA market. No one knows when, how often, or for how long. The model appears as "discontinued" on their website, but SA still makes them for us, cause we're "special".

I got one last year when there were a few in stock at various LGS.

Just keep looking. They will probably turn up again.

                Its a great gun.

Also heard of people buying RIA/Armscor 1911s in .38 and converting to 9mm.

Here is a stainless one for $900. He's in Chula Vista. Not sure if you have to pay taxes.

RifleGear had them but I think they just sold out. Keep checking their website

They also pop up on Grab-a-gun somewhat regularly. Sign up for the back in stock alerts and be ready to jump on it when they come back in stock.

Discount Gun Mart on Morena Blvd. had one 2-3 weeks ago. $999.00 was the price. Give them a call.

Good choice on the Springfield 9mm 1911. I highly recommend it. It is such fun platform to shot on. Martin B. Retting has both the Springer and Kimber last time I was there a couple of weeks ago
                          Remember I was against registration.

I was just advised that my newest S/A 9mm loaded target arrived yesterday.
I think that it was ordered about two months ago. You might check Turner's, they sometimes have them at one of their stores .

Second Amendment Sports in Bakersfield sold me a Loaded Target 9mm last month. $975 + tax and DROS. They had one at their second store last time I was there.
