I have a buddy who has an off-roster pistol he would like to sell. He purchased out of state several years ago and never went through the process of registering it when he moved to California. What happens if we do a PPT?

My suggestion to him was to file the forms now but since he has been a CA resident for several years now he thinks it will be an issue. Is there a specific amount of time you are afforded to properly register your off-roster guns when you move into CA?

Yes there is a time frame and your buddy missed it by a long shot. I think it's 90 days to register or sell. Would this affect the transfer? I don't know but I would think it would be suspicious.
Add on: From what I understand the DOJ doesn't care if you missed the deadline. They care that you are registering it. So I assume he would have no problem registering it then the transfer should be gtg but if not in his name I don't know.

Yes there is a time frame and he missed it yrs ago.
But since I'm no lawyer I can't give you anymore info.
He should of just registered it.

Nothing will probably happen, they just check to see if its stolen.

how old is the pistol. i have sold pistols that were not registered to me that i purchased used in the 80s and sold recently

Nothing will happen to him as long as the pistol doesn't come up stolen.
HOWEVER - he did technically break the law, and registering it would be the best way to show intent to comply.

There is no law against owning or selling an unregistered firearm. If you get caught buying or importing and not registering the firearm in compliance with the law is where you can get yourself in trouble.
Be safe and cover your rear whenever possible.

I have bought a pistol from a new(ish) resident who went well past their allotted time to register - a year or more past. It was not a problem for either of us. Pistol has been with me for over a year now. DOJ will just be happy to get it in the system.

Why wouldn't they be? This has been my consensus with talking to the LGS and DOJ.

From my experience as long as it's not stolen, anyone can sell an unregistered gun. The CDOJ DROS system is glad to take the gun and register it.

I've sold guns for others who didn't have time or were relatives.

You can be the "Seller".

It's a non issue that the seller never did the paperwork within 60 days.....

I don't even think the DOJ would have an issue with somebody other than the registered owner selling a registered gun - as long as it wasn't stolen, and the transfer was done legally.

I concur with others, they primarily just want to know what guns are where.

So, is the deadline to register 60 days or 90 days? Just want to know the exact number of days.
