You may be on to something deeper here, forget what I said about the rank layout. I was thinking of the more or less standard Blaze-A-Rack-O-Plates mentality.

I see it as a big plus that this file layout forces shooters to make their shots count, since if they get a peripheral hit they're going to lose time, and even with solid hits having to wait to see the next plate gets you out of machinegun mode. It would be a lot more frustrating to miss with the setup you have, as opposed to continuing to run down the row at warp speed and then going back to pick up stragglers, if they're not just left standing to game the scoring system. Something that's happened in the last few decades in IPSC shooting, and I suspect in some other supposedly more practical venues, is that despite the old saying, it is possible to miss fast enough to win.

"I feel that as each target appears, my brain has to acquire it and make a decision about when I am sufficiently pointed to hit it. As the day wears on, the front target begins to look huge and I gain a lot of confidence."

Not bearing down on the front sight throughout the trigger pull and break is probably the biggest problem that developing shooters have. People think I'm a bit crazy when I tell them it doesn't matter how fast you need to shoot, Bullseye competition or stopping an attacker that's more than a step away, The Front Sight Is God.

Anywho, this system may be a profound evolutionary step in training the mind for shooting. As Plato once said, "Free your mind, and your a** will follow." Pretty sure that was him.
I meant, it is my opinion that...

In the horizontal unit, you can see everything at once and your focus moves sideways from plate to plate. I mocked up a horizontal unit but after using it, I didn't feel that my accuracy had improved. ....
I'd prefer the horizontal version. It would require reacquiring a target in a different position and would allow rapid fire. Or, of course, having 3-4 of the verticle ones spread a couple yards apart would be even better

Interesting design idea! Please let us know when you plan to go up north and I will come out for sure!

I got to try a prototype of this (not sure if this exact setup), and I have to say that it was fantastic! Enjoyable and challenging all at the same time. Definitely helps to keep you focused and sharp, especially with some of the tiny plates. It is a lot more humbling, even for "good shooters" than a lot of the other training tools out there.

Highly recommend anyone who can make it to give it a try. . .I would much rather be there than at work, but oh well.

Unfortunately I can not make it.

It reminds me of Opening Doors from the Old STI-American Handgunner World Shoot-off Championship. Opening Doors used much bigger plates to start and ended up with a small plate. They were all tome stone shaped.
The first one, the largest, was normally hit three times before the second would be seen.

Having the targets side by side would be an auto plate rack. Have seen a pneumatic version that works very well.

Looks like an interesting product. The primary problem with this kind of product, especially for the personal user and not a range, is portability vs. durability and finding the right balance between the two. Another issue, which may only be for those of us here in the L.A. area is that many of the local ranges do not allow steel targets.

I'm always on the lookout for new targeting systems to use in my training and teaching and the limitations I listed above are the ones I constantly struggle with when looking for something that will work for my needs. Your auto-reset feature is a huge time saver and not many have been able to successfully make something like that that is practical and durable enough for the electronics to survive.

I wish you the best of luck. I will definitely keep any eye on your product.

Essentially, you are correct. It is a resizing gong that gets more difficult to hit the more you hit it. Mechanically programmable, with a wireless interface that allows you to track how well you are shooting.

I had a 80 year old curmudgeon tell me the same thing at my second test shoot. After about 30 minutes, he had a huge smile on his face after he posted a time that was better than all but one of the young bucks.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

terrahawk. i dont mean to knock the idea... i like it.

maybe if you can get it to have a motorized swing left and right and extend the plates up approx 8". I think you have the right path and it really could be great. Im excited to see where you take this. But the linear path leaves me wanting more. I hope this is pleasant criticism and suggestion for your design.

Lateral plates would be more useful however I can't believe those don't already exist with the ability to reset.

For the vast majority of people, a paper target or a couple of steel targets
is all they will ever want. That is cool. No design will please everybody and there are always legitimate complaints. That being said, the unit is not just a gong that dings.

There are around 80 million firearm owners in the united states. If my device makes 200 of them better shooters, I am fine with that.

The conundrum I am in is that I can make the device much more complicated. It is in my nature as a Aerospace engineer to cram as much as I can into everything. As an example, I have the design in place for a very agile mobile base that could host a couple of targets and make them move at 30 mph. I designed it for the Army but they didn't like the $50K cost.

I have been trying to keep the cost of this unit under $2k. My benchmark is the cost of a moderate AR-15 (with glass). If I can get people to think "Should I buy a 4th AR or buy something to make me a better shooter?", I will be happy. I have also been trying to keep as much of this unit's manufacturing in the United States as possible. From my experience, if I had them manufactured in China I could sell them for $700. That is not my style. USA, baby.
