Another vote for the P226 in 357SIG (I own three pistols chambered in this round myself). It's not much of an oddball caliber as some would try and make you think.

While the ammo is not always readily available at your local sporting goods store, you can easily order it online at prices well below 45 ACP and about the same price as 40 S&W if you buy in bulk.

...and there are very few police dept that allow officers to carry it as well...I agree it's a great round...but it has not gotten accpetance in the law enforcement community as yet....

Im all about the Sig 226 in 357sig. We trust the Secret Service to guard the President with it. Try one out and see how you like it. HK USP 45 gets a close second: love that gun.

I have a Sig 220 in .45 acp. I have a Sig P6 in 9mm. My most recent acquistion is a Stainless Sig 226 in .40 s&w and I got a drop in barrel which shoots just fine with no issues. If it wasn't so cost prohibitive, I'd shoot .357 sig all the time. But I am looking at reloading.

So my vote is for the 226 in .40/.357 sig because you can have both. I specifically looked for stainless to help with recoil and it's much more pleasant to shoot vs. my 220 alloy. I also have a rail for a laser/light. Don't have to use it, but nice option to have.

Caliber first, vehicle second.

For what you need it for, I'd have to go with a proven stopper that offered excellent follow-up shots. So naturally I'm going to pick the .45acp - only 2 percentage points behind the 125g .357 in one shot stopping potential with none of the flash and little of the recoil.

When I need to carry, that's what I carry.

As to which pistol, that's a matter of ergonomics and it's personal. My only thought here is that the pistol must be 100% reliable. This is why I'm going to suggest a Sig P220.

My experience with Sig is that every time I pull the trigger, something big comes out the tube. I can mix bullet weights, charge weights - it doesn't matter, the Sig delivers a round and reloads the next.

My personal choice, and one you didn't list, is a 1911.
