DOJ wont release my firearm

Hey everyone,
My name is Sean and this is my first post here on calguns. So, after 10 LONG days, I go to the gun shop to pick up my new Ruger Super Blackhawk. I currently own two shotguns and two rifles that were bought all legally at gun shops, DROS'd, waited my ten days and picked them all up no problem. So I finally decided to buy my first handgun. Well anyway, when i show up they tell me there's a problem, they cant release my gun to me. WTF!!! They show me a letter from the DOJ saying basically that either the purchaser of the gun is prohibited from purchasing a handgun, or the gun has been reported stolen. It's a brand new gun from the factory so it can't be stolen, so apparently I'm ineligible to own a handgun? The only crime i've been convicted of in my life is a skateboarding ticket I got when I was 15. So could this be a case of mistaken identity? The gun shop guys told me not to worry and just call the number on Monday, because it happens every once in a while they say. The guy who helped me fill out my paperwork told me NOT to put down my social security number, but now i wish i did. I am so incredibly pissed of right now that I'm not actually typing, I'm punching my keyboard. So anyway, has this happened to anyone here before? And if it has, what was the problem and what can I expect? Thanks in advance for any responses.

In cases when your name and profile info is close to another individual that is on file as prohibited from owning a handgun, your social security number will provide additional information that can help the DOJ properly identify you. That is why the DROS form asks you to provide a SS number - however it is also identified as optional on the form. I alway provide it for this reason as I have a very common last name and have had issues in the past where my DROS got held up. Now I ALWAYS provide my SS number and have not had a problem since (going on 20 DROS's now). Good luck.

Some people would rather deal with the possibility of having a delayed DROS then to provide an SS number on a form that it isn't required on to help minimize identity theft.

edit: and there isn't even a spot for the SSN on the DROS. I've never had a clerk ask for it when filling out the DROS, and there isn't a spot for it on the copy of the DROS I received. There is a spot for the SSN on the 4473, but that is for the feds, not CA.

Does CADOJ call up the dealer and ask if the buyer put down an SSN on the 4473 if they have a problem determining who it is?

I've been told by FFLs not to worry about my social - but I'm in the DOJ DBs in so many ways I don't care and I'd never want to be disappointed on happy handgun pickup day like the OP

You can always use your tax id number in place of your SSN on any form that asks for it.

Sorry to hear that. I know how upset I was when I accidentally showed up a day early to pick up a gun and realized it wouldn't be released until the next day, so I can only imagine how you must feel right now.

The optional SS number is for the Federal form, the 4473. Your SS does not go on the DROS input sheet. Your Calif. DL/ID is your identifier number on the DROS. You would get the same response even if you put it on the 4473 since that stays at the FFL.

The OP needs to call to clear it up. In addition to similar names, an unrecorded change of address is a very common cause of denial.

i alway put my ss number for that exact reason. a friend of mine got denied because the doj thought he was somebody else when nhe didn't put his ss nnumber.
