I vote for the Smith. The trigger can be made light and smooth as glass (Wolff spring kit plus minor internal polishing), and it looks better IMO.

Have you seen the prices of rugers lately? The S&W is only $100 more... At $200+ difference, the Rugers were a deal, but no so much now.

My favorite revolver is a S&W 686P 2.5", which wears Nill grips:









I have shot only full-power .357 Magnum JHP loads through it, and it is not uncomfortable for some reason.

Smith is too pricey and I don't believe you are getting anything more for the extra bucks besides the name. Go for a Ruger or Taurus in the lower price bracket, but definitely not a lower quality bracket.

I agree that back in the day, Smiths were great with hand-fitted quality. Today, they are the same as the other revolvers, they just charge more. P.S. Taurus has a lifetime warrantee, regardless of whether you are the original owner or not.

Go with what feels best in your hand I have a Rossi 38 special, a Ruger Security Six in 357, a Backhawk in 44 mag, A Smith 38 Chiefs special and a 38 special custom gun by Bill Davis. I like the Rugers myself but they were my first revolvers. Bill Ruger made this sport affordable for my generation and for that I am grateful.
