Question about AR-15 Pistols

This website advertises a 0% lower kit for AR-15 lowers. While probably not as durable as aluminum, polymer is pretty tough stuff. Would it be legal to get this kit, and build your own AR-15 pistol with it (assuming you put a bullet button on it and only used 10 round mags, etc)?

Firstly, you need to build your pistol in a CA compliant configuration. (Search this forum)

Second, I would not use this kit. For the price you can get an aluminum 80% lower, jig and probably all the tools you need to finish the lower.

When I find the time, I will post my thoughts on both.

I have the AR mold and already built an AR Pistol.

I need to mill out my 80% aluminum lowers; finding the time to do that alone is tough.

For someone looking to have something for awhile, I'd recommend an aluminum lower. Especially now that a bill has been introduced that redefines what a firearm is.

Have yet to mill out my aluminum lowers, but so far I've made 4 lower molds. One was a bust, one became a rifle, another a pistol, and the last isn't put together yet.

Thought I'd update you with a picture seeing as how I'm now borrowing my friend's upper (I don't have a pistol upper).

If you are doing this in CA...

Any "handgun" made in CA needs to comply with CA unsafe handgun laws, CA assault weapon laws, and CA SBR/SBS laws.

Therefore...
The handgun needs to be made into a dimensionally compliant bolt-action single-shot pistol or a dimensionally compliant break-top/open single-shot pistol.

Because the firearm can never had been semi-auto prior to creation, you will most likely need to build your own upper, instead of buying an existing upper and modifying it. This is because existing uppers are typically test fired by the manufacturer as a semi-auto.

In addition to installing a maglock & 0 round mag/sled, the following must be done depending on the type of upper...

If the AR style pistol normally operates via direct impingement, then:
1. Do not install a gas tube.
2. Do not install a gas block or plug the gas block.
This makes it a straight pull bolt-action single-shot.

If the AR style pistol normally operates via gas-piston, then:
1. Do not install a gas piston.
2. Do not install a gas block or plug the gas block.
This makes it a straight pull bolt-action single-shot.

If the AR style pistol normally operates via blowback, then:
1. Install a dowel in the buffer tube, which prevents the buffer from moving.
This makes it a break-top/open single-shot.

The upper will also need a minimum 6" barrel length and the handgun will need a minimum 10.5" overall length.

CooterShooter if you look around you'll find a few threads on pouring AR lowers. Elsewhere there has been at least one guy who made his own mold and just poured whatever cheap-azz crap he could find for the lower, including clear with sparkles. "Fruity Ghosts!" he said. His point was since he could make 'em en masse, it was no problem if they broke in short order, he'd just grab another one out of his bag o' lowers.

There is no requirement to document nor prove you went through all those extra steps. You won't need to take pics and have them notarized. It's the "honor system", the same one used for voting illegally/dead. Say you did it and that must be accepted by any legal authority.

Me, I skipped all that stuff as I built mine with an adjustable gas block. It was built and test fired with the gas shut off, equivalent to a single shot pistol. A twist of the screw and it became semi-auto. No blocked mags or other stupid accessories were used. That adjustable gas block tunes the response perfectly and reduced recoil as a bonus.

It was anodized and engraved with ID info for legal protections and proof of owership. It was not registered nor will it ever be. Resistance is not futile.

The cover article on these from Firearm News a few months back reported that their versions shot a few thousand rounds without incident, they even showed CU pictures of what the magwell looked like with that many mag insertions. Sure, these aren't going to last as long as aluminum but if you buy the kit and make half a dozen, how long do they have to last? Shoot a few thousand rounds, trade out the next receiver. It's like a semi-disposable rifle, I like the idea. You can add fiberglass and or aluminum powder to strengthen the receiver as well.
