Ever had an AD?

I hate to admit I'm not perfect, but I have to tell the story. Maybe someone else will be helped by my stupidity. About 6 months ago I was at the range, laying out my pistols in a neat pretty row. As I set each one down I opened the action, locked it and set it down. As I did this confident each weapon was empty already. I grabbed my P89 flipped the slide backward and .....POP... out flys a 9mm round onto the concrete at my feet. I would have bet my paycheck that each gun was safely stored empty. I'm was kind of shaken. I don't make those kind of mistakes. I'm just glad nothing other than my pride was injured.
So come on..... let's hear from the group who's f--ked up like me?

Never had an AD outside the range. I was in a Bench Match a few years ago and loaded up a fresh one into my bolt action rifle. Was preparing to shooting when something slipped on gun rest. I pulled away from my scope to see what was going one. I lifted the 17lbs rifle slightly (stupidly without putting the safety on) and fixed the rest. The rifle slipped from my fingers and dropped a couple inch down onto the rest. BANG...round goes down range. The trigger on these guns are set to a few OZ's so any bump can set them off. No damage done and no one even noticed but it sure scared the hell out of me and I felt just awful for not remembering to put the safety on.

Ohhhh... bad Ju-Ju. How many dead kid/puppy/nun/grandmother explanations have started with "But really officer, I didn't know the gun was loaded."

It is ALWAYS loaded unless it is locked open and you personally are looking into it at an empty chamber. (Even then stick your finger in to make sure.)

My father the fanatic drilled gun safety into me from the age of five, so luckily (knock on wood) so far I have not had an AD.

I had a friend on Guam that would check his pistols for loaded condition by pointing them at the ceiling and pulling the trigger. I stopped visiting after the second time he did that.

Glad you lucked out this time, no harm done and learned a good lesson.

When I was a kid, first time plinking with a Ruger .22lr pistol.
I was sure it was empty, cuz the magazine was out.....right? (yeah, you know what's coming) By the grace of god, when I pulled the trigger, it was pointing down range. That experience haunts me to this day since I know what "could have been". For this reason, I don't necessarily disagree with the new safety on my M&P that locks the trigger when the mag is removed.

a long time ago I was going to go deer hunting with my brother's buddy. he had borrowed a lever action Winchester and was loading rounds into it to see how many it would hold. I was standing in front of him and when he started loading the rifle I moved and sat on the end of the bed. after he loaded however many rounds it would hold he was ejecting the cartridges when one round went off. it went through his closet and blew a few tiles off around the tub surrond in the bathroom. my ears rang for days and needless to say I did not go hunting with him. I never did find out what kind of trouble he got in with his parents over that.

All AD's are actually ND's... and no, never had one.

Backcountry....what about a slam fire? Wouldn't that be an AD, especially if it was the first one you experienced with the gun? Overall I agree that 99% of AD's are actually ND's but an equipment malfunction resulting in a fire would be an AD IMHO.

While aiming at my target downrange, I've pulled the trigger sooner than I meant to and shot out of group.

AD years ago with an 9mm carbine. I can't remember the details but the weapon was pointed down range and there was a jam or something and my buddy (USMC) tried to clear the jam, weapon discharged down range - actually hit the target funny enough - he was very embarrassed.
