Thinking about getting a revolver...

I've had several revolvers before but for one reason or another, have sold them all (small sized revolvers)...

I'm thinking about getting a bigger revolver now, in .357/.38, and have narrowed down to either Smith & Wesson or Dan Wesson. Budget is around $1500... What would you guys recommend? With Dan Wesson I understand there's not much of a choice, it's 715 or 715... With Smiths I'm looking into their performance center offerings. I do like the 715 for its ability to change barrel lengths by the user, as I prefer 4" barrel lengths.

What do you guys think? Advance apologies to the die hard Ruger fans, but I'm not considering them at all. I'm also not interested in the Chiappa Rhino series. Primary use for this revolver will be range fun and friendly pistol comps with friends.

686 seven shot in stainless for the win and under your $1500 budget

S&W R8 or TRR8.

Pros:
Both 8 shot revolvers.
Both accept moon clips.
Both have Performance Center Triggers.
Both have two rails. With the R8, one rail is machined into the scandium frame. Both rails on the TRR8 are removable.
Versatile: You could run a light and an optic if you choose to.

Cons:
N Frame. Big frame for sure.
Not a great holster selection, but the Garrett Holster I have for my TRR8 is outstanding.

^686 is of course a fine choice. I own a model 14, which is .38 spl only 6" blued Target Masterpiece. It shoots dead nuts. I also have a model 66 in 4" (SS) and it's very accurate, but more maneuverable. Can go with a Model 19 if you prefer a blued finish. To me, the older Smiths without the transfer bar have better trigger feel.

I'd watch the classifieds for older Smiths. For pride of ownership and pure shooting enjoyment, nothing quite like an older blued or nickle Model 27 or better yet, a pre-model 27.

I would vote for the Dan Wesson if you can get it. It is a much more unique revolver and the stuff coming out of CZ these days is pretty awesome. Look what they did to the 1911 DW line, just amazing stuff. Also S&W internal lock is annoying from an aesthetic perspective. You see a lot of people and even S&W ads taking pics of the non lock side. Let's get real, a revolver is no longer the combat weapon it once was. People get revolvers because they are fun to shoot and it speaks to a bygone age. That hole by the trigger just ruins it, especially for the stainless steel models. The TRR8 perhaps not so much because it looks so tactical but then it is just sucks that S&W would put a useless internal lock on what is supposed to be a combat weapon (designed for SWAT).

K frame - 19, 66, 13, 65.

L frame 586, 686.

N frame 27, 28.

Workmanship and overall quality is superior.

Any 686 is a great choice. I have the current production 686+ in 4" and it is an awesome gun.

The 627 8-shooter is a fabulous revolver and they are available right now. Not really that much huger than a 686.

I could not care less about the lock issue. I just ignore it.
