I get what you're saying but you could make a similar argument regarding buying a car with a big dent. Some cars are meant for driving. Some are purchased to show/collect.

Likewise, not all guns are equal in their purpose and value.

Edit: I see someone else already made this same point.

Only idiots call idiot scratches idiot scratches. Look at any ones carry piece. What an embarrassment.
California's politicians and unionized government employees are a crime gang that makes the Mexican drug cartels look like a Girl Scout Troop in comparison.

....and some cars are meant for driving/use but their owners also try to keep them looking nice. Doesn't have to be one extreme or the other.

Personally, I just like to take care of those things that I spend good money on. ....whether it's cars, guns, my house or even some of the tools in my garage. Just because I use these things doesn't mean that I have to accept that damage to them is inevitable, unavoidable or that I have to treat them with indifference (as just a "tool").

Buying a used gun with a blemish like the "idiot scratch" would depend in my case. ....same as a car. If other identical guns are available without that blemish for around the same price, I would most definitely pass. If the gun is hard to come by, it would depend on how badly I want it.

I have a DW PM7 and a Colt Double Eagle. Both have idiot scratches. I have never had any training on 1911's. I was never in the military. I simply read the manuals and went from there. It was only after I made the mistakes that I realized some people obsessed over idiot scratches. IIRC, I bought the Colt used and it probably already had the scratch. DE's are hard to find in CA. It took me a year to find the one I bought and I got a good price on it. No regrets. Both guns are shooters, not safe queens.

Neither gun is for sale. No one at the range has ever looked at my guns and/or made a comment. If they did, I would tell them to _____ themselves and go on with my day.
