I have no use for the .40S&W, personally. I use the .357 Magnum rounds for something "similar".

In the end, handgun calibers are pretty much the same so I care about shot placement. The .40S&W requires more training in my hands versus the 9mm and the .45ACP, or even the .357 Magnum.

As to what's next to my bed, it's an SP-101 with a speed loader full of .38 Special +P JHPs. I would also use a 9mm semi-auto with JHPs in its place.

He thinks you're a man when you shoot .40?

I like to shoot 40 sometimes to keep up my skills is dealing with 'snappy' loads. Especially in polymer pistols.
            If I wanted only 1 or 2 pistols, I wouldn't have a 40.

The capability of the 9mm rounds from when I bought my first 9mm pistol to today is amazing. This has detracted a bit from the 40s&w argument.

Another pro-40s&w point I heard was due to limiting of 10 rounds (94 crime bill), the 40 gave you more firepower in those democrat-class magazines. However, I would much prefer a .45 in those situations. Back then, there was not the choices and development of compact .45s as today.

I still think the 9mm pistol is the best all around. You can load it with excellent performing ammo that sacrafices it's tameness somewhat, or load it with standard 9mm hollowpoint that is quite tame, depending upon the shooter.

With that being said, my favorite round is and was always the .45.

Except that same technology has been incorporated into the .40 round, as well. A rising tide lifts all boats.

It is a caliber debate told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

I do have to say that I agree with your comments. Hope the .40 fans don't get too ruffled.

It is NOT a "middle ground" caliber, it has nothing to do with either 9mm or .45acp. It was made because FBI agents couldn't handle 10mm, so what they were doing was reloading weak loads. Enter S&W, they said screw that, we will just shorten the case and make a new caliber. 40 short & weak was born. .40cal doesn't exist far as I'm concerned, most worthless caliber available. It destroys guns, and has no ballistical advantage over modern 9mm ammunition. It is all negatives and no positives, higher recoil, less capacity, less reliability and more wear.

Here's the only pistol calibers that exist, 9mm and .45acp. And there's no reason to choose anything but 9mm. Specially with modern Ammunition. Higher capacity, less recoil , cheaper ammo, and 9mm out performs .45acp according to FBI reports.

The great caliber debate is more of a myth than anything. What you shoot well with is the best caliber for you. But, now we have a whole slew of fantastic

.40cal performance, man shot 17 times and none of the bullets penetrate more than an inch.

Why you need more than 7 rounds. There was a good video on this recently on badgecams, but I'm not about to go looking for it. (police is engaged and shot, breaks his hip during traffic stop. He returns fire with his 7+1 .45acp, misses every shot. Does a reload and the gun jams, shooter runs away.)

                          So I think I'll just get a 40 S&W carbine next.

a nice read on the history of the 10mm which includes the 10mm short aka .40
Most of our readers know that Colonel Jeff Cooper loved the 1911 and thought that it was and is

It's actually the final evolution of an optimized .45 ACP.

                                1. Start with a 230 grain/400 lb-ft low subsonic round.
                                2. Lighten the bullet to ~ 180 grain to improve barrier penetration w/ high subsonic muzzle velocity.
                                3. Reduce the diameter to improve Sectional Density and penetration after expansion.
                                4. Increase pressure to achieve high subsonic velocity in modern 4" Bbls.
                                5. Shorten the case to fit in modern 9mm high capacity form-factor pistols.

.40 is the "Dead Pool" of combat pistol cartridges.
