    Rusty Ruger New Model Blackhawk

Last month I ran into a guy that had gotten a DWI and was in need of money.
He had a Ruger New Model Blackhawk in 357 Mag. that he wanted to sale. I offered $60 because It was ugly and he said yes.

It's a little rusty and missing the rear sight blade and has some ugly grips. Other the that the gun is in great shape.

Oh! I did give the guy a little advise when it comes to drinking and driving. " Beer taste better in a La-Z-Boy."

Yeah, I would've paid $60 for that. No rust in the bore?

Here it is all cleaned up. Can you guess how I did it?

I had the grips in my parts box. They came off my first New Model Blackhawk that was stolen back in 1991.
The bore was shinny exept for the very end which cleaned up nice.

Someone wanted to give me one for free once. Not rusty but it had been turned in to a snub and not recrowned. We ended up cutting up the frame and trashing it and keeping the cylinder and all useable parts.

Not too shabby. I'd have it sandblasted and Parked.

I love stories like this. I find more gratification in the story, the industriousness and elbow grease that goes into the acquisition of that gun than the next $3000 polymer franken doodad project.

Normally I would guess the old Copper penny trick but because of all the nooks and crannies of that revolver I'm going to guess some fine steel wool (brass or copper) and some oil... maybe "Kroil" brand since you seem to have all the good gun restoration stuff already.

(I guess it's possible you also he might have used in electrolysis tank.)

That's great and the gun actually looks good to me the way it is! It has some good character. Great save!
