    Phoenix Arms .22

Are all models roster approved? Some distributors list them as not CA approved? No sku or full model numbers on the roster, just this:

    HP22A (Blue) / Alloy Pistol 3" .22 LR 1/1/2017
    HP22A (Blue) / Alloy Pistol 5" .22 LR 1/1/2017
    HP22A (Nickel) / Alloy Pistol 5" .22 LR 1/1/2017
    HP22A (Nickel) / Alloy Pistol 3" .22 LR 1/1/2017

looking at one listed as "HP22ABB" online, but not sure as it's described as "black" not blued...

I'm betting the HP22ABB is listed by Bud's? For some reason they add the BB moniker to the HP22A with black grips in black finish. No HP22ABB is listed on the Phoenix web site. HP22A is on roster.

      Turners carries them; both finishes.

Was just looking at these this morning... Anyone know if they are dependable? Picky on ammo? Figure they probably aren't perfect for the price but trying not to buy a total p.o.s...

A little picky on ammo, they recommend only "standard velocity"
Of course, I've never seen "standard velocity" .22 ammo in person ever, so mine only eats HV ammo. A little finicky before polishing the feed ramp and other mating surfaces but since then pretty reliable.
The safeties are a little hokey and I would not use this as a carry piece even if rimfire were allowed here but it's a pretty fun plinker.

There are lots of videos on YouTube but basically their negatives are this-

there are extra and some would say too many safeties / safety devices on the pistol

and that because the company instructs you to shoot only standard velocity .22 Long rifle and does not warranty any of the higher velocity .22 Long rifle, that is the norm at most gun stores that you purchase,
they will deny a replacement when your frame cracks which seems to be the most frequent problem that those guns have.

I get the safety issue, that's a liability concern and their lawyers are worried but they should really redesign the pistol to be able to handle high velocity .22 which again is the most readily available 22 ammo. (and therefore also the cheapest.)

But if they redesigned them now I'm not sure if they would be able to be on the California roster anymore.

It's not a total pos, but it's close.

What do you want out of the Phoenix? Something cheap? Something for use as a selfdefense mousegun?

If it is for SD, you might consider the Browning 1911-22 as an alternative, though it is an expensive beast in comparison. The 1911-22 is actually lighter than the Phoenix, and barely larger.

If you want a small and light .22 rimfire mousegun, you could do worse than the compact version of the 1911-22.

What happens when you shrink a 1911 down to 85% of its original size and optimize the new gun to fire .22LR? What once was a serious fighting tool becomes a stellar fun-gun. Not to take anything away from Browning’s new rimfire series. These are capable, accurate pistols. Yet there’s something novel about shooting a small 1911. It makes me smile. So how did they manage to produce such a spot-on homage, and how does the 1911-22 line stack up with the rest of the rimfires?

I got an hp22 with the interchangeable barrels and extended mags kit when I was about 13 yo. It was a lot of fun. My buddy and i both got them and had a blast. I actually lost it

It was reliable and accurate. Though 13yo me was not as tier one as I am now

I don't know if they've gotten worse, but assuming they're similar quality I would say it's a good gun plinker. I've anecdotally heard of people having problems, but for 150 bucks it's probably worth a shot if you want a 22 pistol.

We used all kinds of ammo. Then again it was almost 20yo ago lol.

Do the safety mod on YouTube the mag drops out, also I use mags with the finger rest. I made a mag loading tool, no failures with any ammo I've used. Liked it so much I got the longer barrel also. Cheap plinker

Lol I like how people trash these guns like they're expected to be perfect. The gun costs 150 bucks lol what do you expect? They are a lot of fun though and will gladly replace mine after it dies. Sent it back once already no questions asked and got a new one free of charge. The amount of fun I've had with it was worth the 150 and will buy another if they don't give me a new one when this one wears out
