Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good! -
I have a Springfield GI, great gun. Slide to frame fit is even better then my Kimber Custom Eclipse. however, barrel fitting is not the best. When slide is forward, press on the exposed barrel from ejection port i can feel movement (does not happen to my Kimber). Shoots good and I plan to really torture it with.... WOLF ammo

Options, just like on a truck. Other models might come with night sights, checkering on the front strap, match grade parts, etc. Any number of things can increase the overall cost of a firearm. There is nothing wrong with a standard G.I. model. They are based on the original design J. Browning created. You can usually get the specs for each model and do a side by side to see what is different. Specs can be found on websites, or in catalogs..

It's got really low, cheap sights. Just like the oldies. And the ejection port isn't opened up like current 1911's. It's basically a WW2 type 1911. Just new production. Shop around and buy one with decent sights, you won't regret it.Originally posted by glockk9mmwhy is the GI cheaper than the other models.sigpicLord, make my hand fast and accurate.

I looked at these when they came out and was tempted. By the time I would have done what I wanted to do it rivalled the Kimbers in ptice. So I bought a Kimber custom, then a TLE RL, then a Colt..........you get the picture."I would kill for a Nobel peace prize." Steven Wright"

I currently have a SS 5" Mil-Spec and I had a parked Champion 4.25" WWII GI. The are both great guns. I just like the Mil-Spec better because of the sites, beveled mag well, lowered and flaired ejection port. The WWII GI's (out of the box) often will eject the spent cases on your head instead of to the right. This is a know factor with the GI. The sites were hard for me to see with the GI.
The only thing I did to the Mil-Spec was I got a trigger job done on it.
You can look here for more info on 1911's.

Springfield makes damned fine 1911s.
If you are interested in a mil-spec-type 1911, I'd highly recommend a Colt 1991A1.
Yes, it is more expensive, but it is very obvious why once you see one in person.
They are nicer than the Springfields overall.
However, if you can't afford a Colt, just don't want to spend the extra money, or if the Springer just "calls" to you, you won't be let down at all.
The TRPs are some of the finest production 1911s on the market, BTW.Comment

I can testify to the quality of Springfields, I currently own 3, more than any other make of 1911. I like the 1991, but the first generation 1991's that came out in the early 90's were not as good as the later models. These are the ones that have COLT M1991A1 rollmarked in big letters on the slide, and heavy parkerizing. Three people I know that have had them say the plunger tube will pop off, and the sights arent all that great, albeit an improvement over standard GI sights. My uncle bought one at Papac Brothers in Montebello before they got shut down, and he has had an extraction problem right out of the box, and later, the plunger tube problem. I know a couple of others that have 1991's and swear they are the best! The old guy at the La Puente range said the late 1991's with the polished flats are much improved, as are the even later ones that dont have the big rollmark on the slide. I have a newer one myself, without the big stupid rollmarks, just the "Colt's Government Model" on the slide. So far I've only put about 100 rounds through it, but it's excellent shooter, and would probably make a great base for a custom 1911.
I still think if you want a plain Jane GI 45, you should go with the Springfield. You will ot be disappointed.L.A. County

I you want to shoot one try sharpshooters in torrance. I have the loaded and the mil-spec will be on my list to purchase. I also have a 1991 Colt Commander and don't have a problem with it at all. I just thought of a problem, the brass goes straight up since I have not tuned my extractor yet and it makes me shoot more and more ammo so I can reload moreOriginally posted by glockk9mmL.A./L.B. area.
