Handgun case?

I believe the part that I bolded is going to be a problem. The law requires a locked container during transport and the walk from the car to the range is still part of "transport." Perhaps others can chime in and confirm as I am certainly not a lawyer.A case or range bag themselves do not need to be locked, as long as you put it in the trunk, correct? So I can theoretically put the gun in a normal backpack in my locked trunk, drive to the range, and carry the backpack into the range. Even thought the gun is not locked during the time I am walking from the range parking lot into the range building."Kestryll I wanna lick your doughnut."

Be careful about the foam you choose if you make your own inserts. Some foams are not Ph neutral, and some will act like a sponge absorbing moisture from the air and trapping it around your gun. Either can ruin your finish if you store your gun in it. IMO storing a gun in a foam lined case is a bad idea.
You can find a lot of pics of guns like this, damaged by storing in foam. Good for transport, not good for long term storage.

^Thanks for the heads up. I don't intend to store it in the case long-term. A few days at the absolute most. Since the SP2022 is my only handgun at the moment, it's also serving nightstand duty. The case is just a locked container for transporting it to and from the range or to a trusted family/friend's house if I am going to be away from it for a long period of time.
I just want something that doesn't scream "GUN!" to the world if they peer in to my windows while I'm getting lunch or something after a day at the range. Also something that doesn't scream "GUN!" to an LEO if I get pulled over. I've never been asked if I have weapons in the car and although I will always transport them legally, I don't intend to make traffic stops last any longer than they have to. A briefcase or other inconspicuous case of some description fits both the space and subtlety criteria.Comment

You will find that in no-time your carrying case will be too small. I use a tool bag (with a big-lettered brand name on it) for the ammo., glasses, hearing protection, targets, loader etc. etc etc. I just leave everything in there; add more ammo. and I am out the door. No worries about locking it. My guns and mags. are carried it another lockable soft-sided bag. I keep it locked all the way to the shooting station. Hard-sided are great for traveling but cumbersome and heavy for range use. BTW; many of those "metal" looking cases are really plastic that resembles metal.
When you get a case I would recommend a foam product sold by a wood-working/tool store called Rockler. The foam product is called Kaizem and is often used for tool storage. It comes in two thicknesses (1"+ and 2"+) and two colors;black and white. The beauty of it is that it is many layers lightly glued together. A fantastic solution for gun case foam. Do a search for it. Their web-site can explain it better than I.Comment

This works for me. Check out the SKB Dry-tek pistol bags, they are basic but well made, and the lining is designed to pull and keep moisture out. For a range bag I just use a carry-on type bag, maybe someday I'll upgrade but it works fine and is discreet.Last edited by flanel; 02-13-2016, 9:48 PM.Comment
