    Handgun case?

    Hi all,

Today, I received my SP2022 from my FFL. I also realized that it's case is a little too small.

It has room for the pistol, holster, backstrap and one mag. That's it.

I would like, ideally, a case that can carry the pistol, it's holster, and all four mags that I have for it. Room enough to carry the pistol while cable locked open is a bonus.

I was thinking of looking at those aluminium briefcases from Staples or something and then getting some foam to make an insert. Two questions: Has anybody done this/is there a guide? and would that constitute a locked container (assuming the briefcase was locked) for transporting the pistol to and from the range?

    Thanks.

Get the standard black plastic or leather briefcase.
Aluminum is a bit too "tactical" and tells an onlooker "gun" or "camera gear"

Put the cable lock and key back in the original case and leave it there... it serves no legal purpose for transportation.

    Legally....
Does it fully encase the gun?
Does it lock with a key or combination?

I was thinking aluminium just for durability. I've seen some inexpensive leather or faux leather briefcases but I'd rather not have something that's going to get all scratched up easily and look like crap.

Aluminium I don't mind, sure it'll look more like something expensive is in it but that's still less obvious than a case with SIG SAUER real big on it. Though I can fit that case in to my messenger bag no problem.

Realistically the only time the case will be out in public is going to/from the range, and I can always throw a jacket over it or something in the car if I'm really worried about it. At home, the Sig will have it's own little hiding place anyway.

Fair point about the cable lock, I'm just thinking about that extra level in case for whatever reason I get pulled over. It's a lot easier to demonstrate that the firearm is unloaded and in "paperweight" mode when it has a cable through it. On the other hand, having it quickly accessible by comparison if for whatever reason I do end up needing it would be kinda nice. Although I would imagine the chances of that being incredibly slight.

The expensive aluminum (nicely radiused edges where the panel is die-pressed from a single sheet) are very nice and durable.
Those with flat panels and textured flat surfaces with angle stock for edges are, at best, cheap 3-layer plywood with a very thin aluminum laminate.

I have a Pelican 1170. A bit on the expensive side, but it can fit my G19 (with is slightly smaller than a SP2022, but not by much, I think) with a light and four mags. Not sure if the holster will fit in there. Never tried, since I just toss it in the bag carrying my ammo and eye and ear protection.

I use a Husky tool bag for my range trips. I just slip my padded range bag into it. Landscapers working on the neighbors yard think I'm a handyman.

              Welcome to the forums!

You quickly find that there is a fair amount of gear you need to cart back and forth to the range. Gun, mags, holster, ear protection, eye pro, ammo, maybe a few tools, mag loader, cleaning supplies, etc. It adds up quickly. Are you sure you want to go the small case route instead of getting a range bag? Most range bags these days have the zipper pulls that can be locked together so it satisfies the "Locked Container" requirement.

Other options for a hard case include Pelican, of course. They're not cheap but they're great cases...and the smaller ones aren't priced too bad. As far as foam goes, cutting the foam to fit a particular gun can be nice but it also limits the case to a specific pistol. Using the standard generic foam will allow you to transport other guns as needed. But there are hot wire foam cutters available on Amazon for about $50 if memory serves. Or an electric carving knife works pretty well.

                Excellent point.

This is my range bag... this and a TSA combo lock....

While this case will not hold ear or eye protection, I think it's pretty good to hold everything else. A friend of mine got one and it's nice, especially for the price. It's also lockable. Made by Condor (originally an airsoft company, but doesn't matter for a pistol case).

If you want a "range bag" to hold all the ear/eye protection, ammo, oil, targets, etc.... I like this one made by 5.11

                    Thanks for the welcome!

At the moment, I do have four mags, the pistol itself, around 600rds, two ammo boxes, a cleaning kit and chemicals, a holster, ear protection, eye protection and most common hand tools. I'm getting a mag loader soon too after killing my thumbs loading the two 10rd mags that came with the gun so I could break them in.

I did see the Pelican cases on Amazon and some of them are pretty similarly priced to the briefcases I was looking at. Ideally under $50 or so. I'm handy enough with a boxcutter (thanks to years of working in the auto industry) that I wouldn't be too worried about using a hot wire cutter. That and I have a workbench, and patience.

I likely will get a "range bag" at some point for carrying ammo and other bits for the pistol and rifle alike, but for now I'm just worried about transporting and storing the pistol. It will see more range time than the rifle by far considering ammo is less than half the cost and it's a lot easier to transport. Hence wanting a case of some kind, I'd like something I can just toss into the car without worrying too much about it.

A case or range bag themselves do not need to be locked, as long as you put it in the trunk, correct? So I can theoretically put the gun in a normal backpack in my locked trunk, drive to the range, and carry the backpack into the range. Even thought the gun is not locked during the time I am walking from the range parking lot into the range building.

I have a hatchback, so no "trunk". Same for my fiancee's car and my mother's. Actually I do have a car with a trunk, but that car doesn't run. My daily driver is the hatchback.

$15. I use it to hold 3 pistols and 8 mags. It's 10x13.75, so large enough for your XD Tac. It's No internal lock, so pad lock required.

Sounds like you need a rangebag more than a pistol case. I use a CaseClub case that holds 2-3 pistols and accessories like earpro as well as ammo and plenty of mags.
