The ammo should not be hitting the slide stop unless something is out of spec.

When a round is chambered it goes over the top of the slide stop. The only time impact could occur, is with the next round in the magazine as it rises up.

    To check:
    Take slide assembly off gun
Reinsert slide stop with slide still off the gun
Load a magazine and slowly insert it into the magwell while looking for contact with the slide stop.

On my AO pistol, there's a business cards worth of space between a 230 grain and the slide stop.

The slide stop should only come out when it is exactly lined up with the takedown mark. I see it's lined up in your pictures.
That's a very strange place to jam. Top round should be over the slide stop, and bottom round should still be under it...

If it is a bullet contact issue, it should happen every shot, not just when racking the slide.

If you could reproduce it with snap caps, it's probably not heat related.

You just got me to spend an hour messing with my AO 1911 now...
The only way I can get my AO to do that, is if I press the slide stop from the right side of the gun with my index finger while racking the slide.
Even if I take out the plunger for the slide stop, I can't get this to happen.
I've got about 600 rounds through mine with no issues at all.

The slide stop out of my AO measures the same as Sailormilan2's

(i am not applying finger pressure on the protruding button of the slide release from the other side of the frame btw)
I'll take your word for it. You got me mystified.

It's a slide stop not a release. Using it to drop the slide will cause wear. A new one will likely require minor fitting.

The wide nose of the bullet is what makes contact.

Nothinghere2c, post a pic of the locking end of the slide stop.

            What wear does it cause?

New ss spring and plunger swapped in there yet?
I'm thinking the ss hole is too big?

Oversize ss that needs fitting should keep it in there. EGW heavy duty slide stops have big shank dia... Hand fitting required with lapping compound.

OP needs to measure the ss hole.
Try fitting drill bit shanks in the hole to get a read on how big it is (pin gauge is best).
              13/64" should not go.
At least you can rule out ss hole size.

It wears on the slide stop where it catches the slide and can erode the edge of the pocket on the slide rendering the slide stop inoperable.

Have you ever seen one that was worn out?
I have operated one using the slide stop to release the slide for over 100,000 rounds with no issues.
I have also been around many people with very high round counts who have not had issues.
                  Maybe I am just lucky.

This is strange if it happens after some shooting and hard to debug remotely.

                    Need "close up" pictures of:
1- slide stop, showing the inter most point
2- gun without the slide but with the SS inserted and a loaded mag seated and locked.
3- picture of slide stop on a grid paper with pin placed parallel to lines, to see if the pin is bent.

thanks everybody. i followed the suggestions in the thread and took a closer look.

the rounds are super close to the slide stop on the inside and sometimes ever so slightly brush up against it when loading magazines.

i ended up notching out the end of the slide stop where it contacts the plunger, and extended the spring ever so slightly to put a bit more pressure. i was able to take the gun out and try it today, and so far its functioning as intended!

                      cheers guys, appreciate it.
