I agree that my choice would be a revolver.
however, she needs to handle it and shoot one to make sure it fits her hand and she is comfortable with it.
handling a gun in the store may feel like it is the right handgun but firing it is often another story.

do not rule out buying used.

          from the S&W website: http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/w...7_757751_image

I personally have a model 66 [and 19] which is k-frame but find the 686 to be too large for my hand.

start with the .22 if it fits her [not your] hand and she enjoys shooting it in this series and she won't be going in the wrong direction.

Revolver .22lr is the best choice for HD firearm IMHO.

I'd to vote for the 10 round Smith in a 4 inch barrel. Can't go wrong with that!

My wife has a Walther P22 and she loves it.
It has ~600 rds through it and only 1 stove pipe, but I blame the ammo on that one since it created a huge puff of black smoke but no squib.
Make sure your .22lr is 1200fps or higher.

As said in the post I quoted, its a pain in the butt to re assemble with the oem guide rod and spring, so I bought her a captured guide rod/spring and it makes it a lot easier.

IMHO .22LR for home defense is a mistake.

Rimfire cartridge primers do not ignite as reliably as center fire primers.
Somewhere, I have a bunch of .22LR cartridges that I shot and they didn't go off. Multiple good hammer strikes on the back, but no ignition. I'll upload a picture if I can find them... not something I would want if my life were on the line.

I'd recommend .25 acp for the recoil shy. On roster options: Phoenix Arms HP-25

If you must go with .22LR, go with a revolver. When the bullet doesn't go bang, you get a new one on the next trigger pull without needing to clear the chamber.

You could always buy a CZ 75b, sp01, p01 etc (whatever fit her hand and she likes) and also pick up a Kadet .22 kit for it. That way she could learn on the .22, and even keep it as an SD gun, and if she ever wanted to move up to 9mm, just put the original top end back on. Save the Kadet for cheap range practice afterwards.
You'll be out close to a grand though for that setup.

+1 on the buckmark, 1911-22, or a revolver.

Are ruger sr22's really hard to find now that they're off ca roster? My wife has this as her HD pistol and we've put well over a thousand rounds through it without any problems.

Gsg 1911 enough said. Wonderful gun. Narrow grip. Good feel and very low recoil.
