Pick a caliber, go to a range that rents, get 4-5 different guns, and see what u like.

Striker fired guns will essentially be single action and have light trigger pulls. Glocks will have no external safety, XD's will have the grip safety, none can be deckocked... There are other choices too.

Hammer fired semi's will be double action/single action, or just single action. Some DA hammer guns will have deckockers making the first pull heavier, with lighter follow up pulls. Or you can pull the hammer back and have all lighter pulls. Alot of hammer guns will have manual safety's but not all.

Other hammer guns are single action only , no deckocker, manual safety. All trigger pulls will be lighter than DA pull but will have the safety as a failsafe.

Revolvers will be all double action unless you pull the hammer back manually before every shot, They dont fail. Dont use magazines like semi's but you can use speedloaders.

As far as caliber 9mm and up are the most popular chosen for defense.

Rent shoot different guns. Maybe take a pistol class to learn the fundamentals. Many good guns out there S&W, Glock, CZ, Sig and etc. I like a lot of guns, but my favorite is the CZ. All the above are great guns to start out with. Good luck with your purchase, figure out your budget then rent some different handguns, see what feels most comfortable in your hands.

You can't go wrong with a quality .22lr handgun. It will provide years of inexpensive training and fun. It will pay for itself in no time. A .22lr will help you learn the fundamentals easier and cheaper than a centerfire handgun.

Fixed , best of both worlds

OP, go to the range and shoot as many as possible. Everyone will have a different opinion and so will you.

Start with the Glock 19. After some trigger time you'll get curious about other guns bu tthe G19 will hold it's value if you decide to trade for something else.

My first two pistols were the 1911 and the G19. Since then I sold those two and have owned at least a couple hunderd other pistols and guess what I own today and consider my two favorite pistols...Colt 1911 and the G19!

Glock 19 is good choice, I like them so much I have two. Beretta 92's are great guns as well.

Not really much to go off of. The quickest, and probably easiest way is to decide on a caliber, run down to a LGS, let them know you're a first time buyer, ask to see anything that even interests you. Make a list of the guns that felt good in your hands, research them at home, head back to the LGS and buy the one that meets your needs.
