I had a 7-1/2" super Blackhawk :Bisley" model for a few years and sold it. The thing hurt my wrist due to the grip angle with hot loads..it also loostened the grips upon hot use. I now have a 629 Magna Classic..what a caddilac gun compared to the Bisley.

I have two S&W Models 29's. I find that I prefer the grip of the double action Smiths over the single action Ruger's. By far my favorite is my 1959 vintage 4" 29 no dash. That particular revolver has seen lots of use and is still as tight as it was the day I got it.

Over the years I have gotten over the desire to shoot a bunch of stout .44 mag loads and I mostly shoot my .44 special equivalent reloads.

      6 1/2" 29-2 on top, 4" 29 on the bottom.

I'm really happy with my Ruger RedHawk It has the 9.5" barrel and is a lot of fun to shoot. One of those in a 4" would be a great gun. I also really like the blackhawk Hunter which is SA but that doesn't do much for your wants for a 4" barrel.

friends said that the 44 mag was gentle to shoot.... Well they rented one at a range and shot reloads....

On our next trip I let them shoot factory ammo.... huge difference.....

              OP-
Rugers are lower in price than the S&W.
The Rugers are super strong, but maybe a bit clunky when compared to the S&W.

Many used 44 MAGS have been shot less than 100 times and can offer good value.... Midway USA has a U tube series on buying / inspecting a used S&W revolver.... If you are buying used, the videos are a good watch....

The beauty of the 44 is the velocity.... you really don't get the potential from the .44 with a 4" or shorter barrel.... the 5" -6" is idea to me....

The Dirty Harry 8 3/8" is for hunting or silhouettes......
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Have you priced ammo? It's an expensive caliber. No break on .44 Specials either. I have a 4" Redhawk and love it, but I personally would not own a .44 Mag unless I reloaded, which I do.

Once you get your revolver squared away, grab yourself a Marlin 1894 lever rifle and shoot the same cartridge!

A good caliber for the woods, hunting and plinking if you have the money for ammo.

Yes, reloading is a good thing.

Get yourself a companion .44 in a lever gun......dang....what fun..

I admit I'am a sucker for companions guns of the same caliber. .357 on a wheel gun with a Marlin lever in .357.

                    .22 as well.

                    Marlin .44 cowboy limited.

Love 44 mag. But like others said, you have to reload to have fun. That's the only reason I keep the caliber.

This one is a good to have on the CCW

S&W Model 29 with 3" bbl., Recoil of any and all types of loads I have fired are more than fine. I am of the belief that because of the shorter barrel there is less time to build pressure and equals less recoil. Accurate ? I often forget I am shooting a 3" As for velocity, it is always going to be a .44 Magnum. HEY LOOKOUT !. And yes I agree, a companion rifle is a must ! Just my 2 cents here.
Lead will be worth more than silver and gold when they are giving it away free !

Instead of a 44 mag, get a 624 or 625 instead. You'll thank me later.

I had a taurus m44 44 mag back in th3 mid 90s i loved that gun was reliable and very accurate. It just got pricey to shoot i use to shoot it twice a week and it was 13 bucks per 50 rounds for reloads.(now that would be cheap today).

A friend was interested in buying it and i sold it for what i had into it and wanted a 45 so used the money to buy the 45.Also got into reloading right after so if i reloaded i would have kept it would made a great camp woods gun but i just got a glock 20 for that.

That link might mean I will shoot mine more now.

I have a 629 6.5 and a Marlin 1894PG. With a 20" barrel that .44 mag gets a lot more power. Shooting mild steel plates the 6.5" revolver will dent it and the rifle will blow a hole clean through. That's mild steel though.

My vote would be Ruger Redhawk 5 inch barrel
It is stout but not unwieldy and its a very durable design.
Costs a lot less than any S&W too.
