    Series 70 Remington

Here is a real series 70, WWII edition. Every single part is correct, not a rework. From the original owner, a tanker in WWII. Five correct magazines, etc. Shot and it works flawlessly. What magnificent piece of history.

It's not a series 70. They didn't come along until 1970 (go figure). What it is, is a 1911-A1. Made by Remington-Rand, a company that made typewriters before the war. It was made in 1945 very near the end of production, which probably explains why it is in such good condition.

The light caught the "idiot mark" just right. Can't even see it in person . . . and it's not a new mark.

These days 1911's fall into two very simple categories:
                    1. Guns with stupid, nay useless, firing pin blocks are what is commonly called Series 80
                    2. Guns produced as God and John Moses Browning intended without firing pin blocks are commonly referred to as Series 70

No firing pin block? It's Series 70 just like every single other 1911 ever made between the year 1911 and infinity.

Not to be a internet know-it-all, but you are as full of s%^& as a Christmas turkey.

The Series 70 1911's were first produced in the very early 1970's. The difference between them and the earlier models was the addition of a collet style barrel bushing and the barrel was reprofiled to accommodate the new style of bushing.

The idea of the collet style bushing was to increase the accuracy of the gun without having to got through the effort of hand fitting the earlier style solid bushing. While the idea has some merit, there was a bit of an uproar that the fingers on the collet could break off and jam the slide. My 1974 vintage Gold Cup has the collet bushing and has never had a problem in the last 41 years.

Despite all the hoopala, Colt stuck with the collet style bushing throughout the production span of the original series 70 guns. In the early 1980's, Colt switched over to the series 80 1911's with the firing pin block.

Another uproar ensued when it was claimed that the new firing pin block, which was activated by the trigger, made the trigger pull too heavy. Now all of a sudden the earlier series 70's started receiving nostalgic praise for what a fine gun they were.

A few years ago, Colt reissued the "Series 70", but without the collet bushing. What they are, your misinformed opinion notwithstanding, is NOT a "real" series 70 as produced in the 70's, but rather a copy of the earlier 1911-A1.

All that is pretty worthless since every gun maker out there refers to Series 70 & 80 in the exact manner I outlined. What Colt did or for that matter does, impacts not one bit how people have evolved the use of the terminology.
You think Les Baer ever put one of those stupid collett bushing in one of his guns? Nope. And his guns are . . . Series 70.

Using "Series 70" to describe any 1911 w/o a firing pin blocking safety is a misnomer. If your argument is that common usage equals correct usage, then I'm going to refer you to the clip/magazine thing. Or the revolver/pistol thing, if you want to get a crowd riled up.

                              Having said that... Nice find!!
I think getting a gennie tanker holster from a real-life tanker is almost as good as getting the Remington-Rand. I'm jealous.
