yes, the way that a CA resident would have a off-roster handgun is if he bought it during the SSE days, bought it when it was on-roster (not the Sphinx), bought it before there was a roster, bought it from someone else in a CA (PPT), is a CA LEO (roster-exempt), bought it out of state and then moved to CA, or was gifted to him by a parent, grandparent, child, or grandchild.

Once it is in CA and owned by a member of the public, then it can be sold and resold in PPT transfers without violating the roster limitations placed on dealers.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Have a parent or grandparent out of state? If so they can gift it to you legally.

So, make a Christmas list? lol

I liked the Sphinx so much I bought two of them during SSE1's closing months. I don't even know what it would take to get one away from me because I'm not looking to part with them. I can tell you $1500 wouldn't even get my attention - more likely a trade for another SSE or something nice.

              Fun read though.

Considering your threads and topics....I would suggest a few more years in college.

Also, does this loophole also work for banned-by-name rifles such as Knight's (prior to bullet button)?
Going price new is about $900-1000, but others have stated, no one will even entertain selling one for $50-100 over.

I was thinking about trading my Sphinx SDP Compact earlier this year and had cash offers for about $1500-1600 if I decided to sell, just an FYI.

(Already answered, but worth repeating and adding a few details.)

Possession laws such as banned rifles, AW configurations, threaded barrels on semi-auto handguns, secondary vertical grips, etc. ALL APPLY at all times regardless how you obtained them. A side note: some items and configurations are legal for *some* people due to previous registration (RAW) or grandfathering (magazines over 10 rounds.)

Roster is an impediment to getting a NEW gun from dealer, but there is no associated *ban* on possession of non-roster handguns. This is one of those unique positions where you can have it, you can transfer it, but you cannot import it.

Compare to pre-ban magazines (you can have them, but you cannot import them and you cannot transfer them) and registered assault weapons (you can have them, but you cannot import them and you cannot transfer them.)

It's all a game that starts with "you can have it, you can transfer it, but you cannot import it" and ends with "you cannot have it, you cannot transfer it and you cannot import it." Different items are at different stages of this game - non-rostered handguns are at the initial stage, magazines are reaching the final stage.

For the rest of the guys: cut OP some slack.

He is learning about all of this and he is justifiably upset that our laws are this stupid. Weren't we all in disbelief when we first heard about it?
