    My 1st squib

Today I was shooting factory load UMC 9mm through my M&P Shield and experienced my 1st squib. I was a little bewildered at 1st being it had never happened to me before, but I was lucky as it did not chamber another round causing damage. I was able to use a rod to bang out and was back in buisness. This was my 1st outing with the Shield, so Im glad it came home without damage. I will for sure have more of a heightened awareness of squibs in the future.

I agree with DysfunctionalVet, call the company and tell them about the squib. I'll bet they'll have you send the ammo back from replacement or refund. Either that or shoot it very, very slowly... no double taps. Good luck!

i bet that was an odd feeling

i've been shooting over 40 years, have never experienced a squib and i hope it stays that way...my biggest fear has always been a squib during a rapid fire sequence, where the time response between my brain and my trigger finger aren't fast enough

the best thing that can happen during a squib round is to hope the next round fails to chamber

glad to hear it all worked out for you, hopefully its not some bad ammo, one of the reasons i don't buy reloads is my fear of a squib, but you had factory...kind of scary when you think about it

It was a 250 round box and still have a least 200 in it so I will be slow and aware between shots until gone.

I've experienced two squibs in my lifetime. Both were with Tula 7.62x39. Luckily for me, the amount of power in them were so little, they did not have enough power to cycle the actions. Even if i did pull the trigger again, nothing would have happened.

Bullet about 1" into the rifling and a few taps with a cleaning rod and i was back in action.

My guns and body parts are worth more to me. Call the company and get a replacement. You were lucky. What if you have part of a bad batch and someone else isn't as lucky as you were?

I started weighing my factory rounds and marking the OK boxes after my recent squib.

Man, that's a lot of work, but I can see myself doing that. Wonder if it makes sense to weigh the 50rd boxes at a time? I guess it depends on how good is the scale, right?

I imagine weighing 20rd boxes of Russian 7.62x39 would yield widely divergent numbers.

Scary Stuff. Just need to be careful and pay attention after each shot.
Not sure how to avoid that with rapid firing.

I had one, and have seen a few others, due to reloads not having any powder. If I were in the middle of a match clearing the malf, I'd make sure to check the ejected round. If a whole round comes out, I'd keep on shooting, if an empty case, then I'd be worried about a stuck bullet.

The one I saw that was with a revolver gave the bullet just enough oomph to jam in the forcing cone, locking up the cylinder, so it was impossible to open it up to clear the remaining rounds. The owner ended up casing it with the partially loaded cylinder to take it home.

I can imagine contacting UMC and having them tell you about their limited liability, then send you one cartridge as a replacement.
Seriously, I wouldn't worry about it and write it off to experience, but that's me.
I meant, it is my opinion that...

Glad you caught it OP. My first squib took the barrel rite off my snubby. I still got off easy.

It happens. Shoot enough and your odds go up. No powder squibs can't cycle most chambers. The scary ones are when they have enough power to cycle the slide with a stuck bullet. I've had one of those and got lucky.
