    10 Day Wait Checklist

    Hi Guys,

New here and have purchased my very first handgun. An RIA 1911 Tactical. I am currently serving my 10 day waiting period. This friday I will be eligible to pick up the gun. I'm hoping to have a chance to shoot it over the weekend so I want to be sure I have everything I'll need. So help me make a checklist of essentials with specific links if possible.

Here's what I have so far.

-Proof Of Residency for FFL. (DMV Driving Record)
-Ca Approved Cable Lock for FFL
    -Handgun Bag
    -Ammo
    -Ear & Eye Protection
    -Ammo Holders
    -Lock For Gun Case

I'll need to field strip my gun, clean, & oil it before shooting right? What products would you recommend for all that? Any specific tools I'll need to disassembly?

Just gunbag, lock, protections, ammo and gun for the range....this gun doesn't need much cleaning (for me anyway) but I have only put a few hundred rounds thru in the last few months.

You should also have your handgun safety certificate with you.

As for field strip/cleaning your new 1911, YouTube is your friend. I prefer Ballistol for cleaning & Hoppes oil for lubrication. There are many good products out there that will work. As I said, spend some time on YouTube - plenty of good videos on the subject (how you clean your firearm is just as important as which solvent to use).

      Enjoy.

Did you buy new from the dealer? If so it comes with a lock.

You already started DROS, which must mean you've already supplied all needed papers to purchase your gun. On pickup you should bring the same government issued ID, they may require this to release the gun to your possession.

Eye and ear protection is a must. I like Surefire EP5 ear plugs, if you're shooting at an indoor range double up with ear muffs as well. Buy some inexpensive safety glasses if you don't have good impact resistant lenses already.

A lockable range bag is good to carry your ammo, pistol, and range gear in.

You don't need any tools for field stripping a 1911, and any gun specific oil and clp will work great for maintenance. I personally use Otis Bore Bright, ballistol for cleaning, and slip 2000 for oiling.

Nice job on getting a 1911, you'll love it, and be safe out there. Take a few firearms classes, it's fun because there's always something new to learn and there's always good people to meet.

I'm not sure your driving record qualifies - you may want to call your dealer and check.

          From the DOJ FAQ
          8. What identification is required to purchase a firearm?
Clear evidence of identity and age is defined as a valid California driver license or a valid California identification card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Military identification is also acceptable if accompanied by permanent duty station orders indicating a posting in California, but the dealer must retain copies of both documents.

Temporary driver licenses and temporary identification cards are not accepted forms of proof of identity and age.

          13. What documentation is acceptable proof of residency for handgun purchasers?
Utility bill from within the past three months that bears on its face the individual's name and either of the following:
The individual's current residential address as declared on the DROS form; or
The individual's residential address as it appears on his or her California Driver License or California Identification Card, or change of address attachment thereto.
"Utility bill" means a statement of charges for providing service to the individual's residence by either a physical connection (i.e., hard wired Internet, telephone connection or cable connection, or a water or gas pipeline connection) or a telemetric connection (i.e., satellite television or radio broadcast service) to a non-mobile, fixed antenna reception device.

Residential lease that bears the individual's name and either of the following:
The individual's current residential address as declared on the DROS form; or
The individual's address as it appears on his or her California Driver License or California Identification Card, or change of address attachment thereto.
"Residential lease" means either of the following:
A signed and dated contract by which the individual (tenant) agrees to pay a specified monetary sum or provide other consideration for the right to occupy an abode for a specified period of time; or
A signed and dated rental agreement by which the individual (tenant) agrees to pay a specified monetary sum or provide other consideration at fixed intervals for the right to occupy an abode.
Property deed that bears the individual's name and either of the following:
The individual's current residential address as declared on the DROS form; or
The individual's address as it appears on his or her California Driver License or California Identification Card, or change of address attachment thereto.
"Property deed" means either or the following:
A valid deed of trust for the individual's property of current residence that identifies the individual as a grantee of the trust; or
A valid Certificate of Title issued by a licensed title insurance company that identifies the individual as a title holder to his or her property of current residence.
Current, government-issued license, permit, or registration, other than a California Driver License or California Identification Card, that has a specified expiration date or period of validity. The license, permit, or registration must bear the individual's name and either of the following:
The individual's current residential address as declared on the DROS form; or
The individual's address as it appears on his or her California Driver License, California Identification Card, or change of address attachment thereto.
Examples of acceptable proof of residency:

          Current DMV registrations.
Electricity, gas, cable bill with purchaser's name on it from within the last 3 months.
Signed, dated and notarized rental agreement/contract.
Examples of documents that are NOT acceptable proof of residency:

Hunting or fishing license (these documents are not issued by the government).
          Cellular phone bill.

              Hi, Matty.

I went through the buying process last week and will pick it up Friday. The day I purchased it, I had to do the following:

Fill out a lot of checkboxes and sign a lot of stuff.
Show my drivers license and car registration for two forms of ID.
Show my safety certificate, in my case the older handgun certificate.
              Do a safe handling demonstration.
              Give them a thumbprint.

When I go in, I'll have to show ID again. I'll also take a lockable case in case I can't lock the firearm's case. I have an SUV and no trunk. I'll clean and lube it before shooting it, but not everybody does and it doesn't seem to matter.

Presumably you already showed them the safety certificate or took the test and was issued one. You might have to do a safe handling demo if you didn't already do one.

              Enjoy your 1911.

              Chuck

I'm pretty sure it will suffice. It's an official government document printed by the dmv on government paper stock.

I've read of many people doing this with success however I may check with my FFL before friday to avoid an unpleasant surprise.

I just thought you should check, it seems like each shop does things differently.
I've had a shop say a lease was not acceptable before and another only excepted electric bills and car registration.
It sucks to go in for a pickup and have paperwork issues!

Driver's license, car registration and firearms safety card about two months ago.

I've never been asked for my car registration but I've always brought in 2 utility bills? Should I of still been required to show car registration?

Most of the time all you need for pickup is:
                        Driver license
Car registration (or other secondary proof of residence)
                        FSC
Pickup tag (This depends on the FFL. most don't require or even issue one, some do. If they do they tell you at DROS)

Now since it seems like your actually asking what you need to shoot after pickup it would be:
                        Hearing protection
                        Eye protection
lockable container/range bag for gun to comply with transport laws
                        ammo
targets (unless going to an actual gun range that has them there)

You are not required to use a cable lock just to transport, any lockable container will work. That includes your car trunk. Ammo holders aren't necessary, the box the ammo comes in works great. Ammo holders are more useful for re-loaders.

OP, sounds like you've got your bases covered. I always clean my new guns before I shoot them, some don't need it but it doesn't hurt anything to do it anyways. Enjoy!
Settle down, folks. The new "ghost gun" regulations probably don't do what you think they do.

I'm not sure the DMV printout will work either. The requirement is for a secondary proof of residence, a DMV printout will not fit that requirement since it is realistically the same document (DL) that you used to prove your identity in a different format. Maybe I'm being too literal with the term secondary thinking it should be a separate document.
