FBI to Adopt 9mm

I'm currently using Hornady 115 gr FTX Critical Defense as the nightstand duty load, another pricey modern cartridge. Maybe I should move to a heavier round. It's the old question of balancing velocity vs. bullet weight vs. expansion vs. penetration, and many a pitcher of beer has been consumed while trying to resolve the question.

Have you never tried 124, 135, or 147 out of your "nightstand" gun? You might find it shoots a little different. And you might like it (no government studies needed?) Have fun, be safe.

Currently running low on Gold Dots 124gr+P, never had the opportunity to buy/try HSTs. What other SD ammo do you guys recommend for a 4" 9mm barrel?

I get that improvements have corrected some shortcomings of 9mm, but won't that new black magic jumbo jumbo also make the .40 a better round, too?

And a 20mm anti tank round will do even better, but against humans 9mm is apparently sufficient. ER docs and Surgeons say they can't tell the difference between a 9mm and 45 wound. Rifle and shotgun wounds, on the other hand...

No, it doesn't look good at all. It's possible that the FBI is more interested in barrier penetration, or that he got a bad batch, or maybe the round isn't that great.

Any flavor of Federal HST and any standard (non-short barrel) Gold Dot should be just fine from a 4" barrel. I run HSTs in most of my self-defence semiautos and Gold Dots in my revolvers.

I am in no way Federal but I know our new hires at my agency have been about 70% female for several years and now we're getting some pressure to switch to 9mm as the female staff failing to qualify (at a ludicrously disproportionate rate, sorry PC police) are blaming recoil as the main factor.

Yeah....I remember when they went Full Tilt Boogey for the 10MM round. Rumor had it that after the Miami Shootout (FBI had wheel guns) they wanted some serious firepower.

Recoil and female agent smaller hands inability to grip the weapon. Switched to .40 then.

Love my Glock 19s (and 23s) but not sure about a 9 going thru a car door..

Politics has more to do with the FBI's decision to move to 9mm than ballistics, and its politics that prevents them from saying why. They have more female agents than they did in 1990, and more of them than the men can't shoot .40 effectively.

Its politically incorrect to say: "9mm is easier for women to shoot, and with modern ammo it is an effective round. Although it is less effective with modern ammo than the .40 we have been using, we are going to move everyone to 9mm so we don't stigmatize female recruits." So instead they discover that 9mm is "better." Its not better ballistically, but it makes them, or more precisely their political bosses, feel better about themselves, so its "better."
