What can you tell me about the Browning Hi-Power?

I have seen Browning Hi-Power pistols before and know a little about their history, but I have never handled or shot one. I think the pistol is a nice design and I wouldn't mind owning one, but I never really paid much attention to them.

Today I had an acquaintance approach me and asked if I was interested in buying a pistol from him. Of coarse I gave him my standard answer of "It depends, What is it? What condition is it in? How much do you want for it? and are you the legal owner and willing to do a legal transfer through a dealer?"

He said it is great condition. It has somewhere between 500-1000 rounds through it. It was his dads and it was transferred to him many years ago. His dad bought it sometime in the late 80's or early 90's.

He shows me a picture and it looks like it has a stainless frame and black slide. From what I can determine at this point it appears to be a MKIII Practical in 9mm.

What do you guys think about this pistol? Is it a "good" gun? Are there any things I need to look out for? I prefer the the classic blued / walnut look of the original Hi-Power pistol, but I can live with this color combo. He said it is an FN gun but I have read that some of these were made in Portugal. Is there a preference between a Belgium gun and a Portuguese gun? Is a MK III an improvement over the earlier versions?

and finally, What would you pay for it assuming it is in real nice condition? He said it is not scratched up or damaged at all.

This is a picture stolen from the net, not the actual gun.

Made in Belgium, assembled in Portugal. No big deal.

    Buy it, you'll love it.

CJ, I have an old one, been rode hard and put away wet a few times but keeps on ticking.

You might head over to http://www.handgunsandammunition.com/ there is a wealth of info there on the BHP and a lot of knowledgeable folks.

My only gripe about the BHP is hammer shank bit, that some of us experience.

          Fine firearm.

          Respectfully,
          Kyle

Also you can ask here https://forums.1911forum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=15

If you don't buy it ask him how much. I'd like to buy a Hi Power one of these days.

I love the BHP. Its all metal single action, designed by Browning after he made the 1911. I believe the story goes that he died before the finished product. Its designed around the 9mm round and at that time high capacity. Its capacity has been overthrown by other 9mm pistols but i believe Mecgar makes a 15 round mag (not too sure since i can't get it).

As for use, mine has been very reliable. Its grip are thin like the 1911 but still a little thicker due to its double stacked magazine.

Many people complain about its magazine disconnect which u can remove to make the trigger smoother.

if u can get your hands on one, get one. The price is a little steep compared to other 9mm pistols in its price range (92fs, CZ75 - goes for about $5-600). A new BHP is around $8-900.

I plan on buying from him unless he is asking alot more than I am willing to pay, and if that is the case, I will gladly send him your way. He is in the Fresno area.

I don't really follow the BHP market but off the top of my head I would pay something like $5-600 for it considering it's age and level of use.

Yes, there are other Nines out there. I fell hopelessly in love with the Browning Hipower ever since i layed eyes on her. Over the years, I have aquired 2,a 1936-38 All matching Belgium Browning Hipower with Holster and original mags, and later a Belgium HP, that made it's way back here after being an Israeli PD gun. I can tell you they are all quality guns, and shoot very accurately. That being said, Imho, they are the best feeling and sexiest looking guns i've ever owned. They also are great carry guns, but you have to be very comfortable in operation. the early ones have a short safety and hard to run your thumb down it to take it off safety, and if you have my large hands you tend to get some hammer bite. If you were ever able to hold and fire one you would be immeadiately be convinced, why there so valuable. they are 1st shot single action, then its on! Next gun to consider would be a CZ 75.

That one with hard chrome frame, fixed sights. If excellent condition, maybe $800.

I just read that on one of the links. The frame is not stainless, but hard chrome.
