Thanks for all the advice. Based on my search here for previous sales and on gunbroker I was figuring 5-6 hundred. I'll see what my friend wants. Got a few more pictures. It's actually a 65-5 looks like and. Serial number looks like BPL5xxx. Anyone got a date on that?

I agree. I've come to love this place in a short while.

The standard catalog of Smith & Wesson shows a serial number range of:

          Nov 1993 BPE
          Dec 1993 BPK

Yep. Sounds like an early 1994 gun to me.

              Bad guess.

              Nice piece. Buy it..

Ok. So I thought the 65-3 was the three inch barrel. But obviously not since this 65-5 looks like a 3 inch barrel. What's the -5 mean? Is it just a later run with some adjustments. I read on a smith form it had some MIM parts, but then someone said that was incorrect. Probably buying it anyway depending on price. Thanks for all the info everyone.

-5 roughly means "5th generation" of that specific model. Some changes were made along the way and that's the 5th "major one" so to speak.

If that Model 65 was made in 1994, then there are no MIM parts. In 1997, the trigger was replaced with MIM trigger but still a -5 model.

1997 serial numbers start with C.

The dash number actually indicates an engineering change.

Interestingly the change to MIM trigger in '97 was NOT a numbered engineering change. MIM hammer & frame mounted firing pin came in '97 with the -6 change. Kinda wondering if this is a typo in the SCSW?

Quick & dirty for MIM hammer & trigger is that the MIM parts are black.
