    Smith and Wesson Id help

Anyone help me identify this smith? I don't trust my photo comparison skills and I'm pretty sure there's some experts in here. Obviously a 357.

Looks like a 3 inch mod. 65. Open up the cylinder, it should state Mod. 65-?. Unloading would be helpful, hate to punch a hole in your wall.

Nice revolver by the way. Hmmm, your picture disappeared.

Thanks. Image back I was having trouble adding the second picture. Ended up deleting it I guess.

My friends gun. Can't open. I thought the model # would be there visible but I was wrong. Looked smaller than I'd expect a 686 to be.

The 686 is the larger "L" frame while the 65 is a "K" frame.

Another guess would be a Model 64. Difference between the two is that the 64 is .38 spl only, while the 65 is .357/.38

                Correct, trigger945. If it's chambered in .38 Special it's a Model 64. If it's chambered in .357 it's a Model 65.

OP, tell your friend to look at the right side of the barrel. The caliber will be clearly marked. Additionally, the model number should be stamped inside the crane. It will be a two digit number, probably followed by a dash and then a single digit number. If there is a number inside the crane longer than that, it's either the serial number or the factory assembly number. To determine which one it is, have him remove the grips and check the bottom of the grip frame. If there is a number there, that is the serial number and the number inside the crane is either the serial number stamped again or if it's a different number then it's the assembly number. If there is not a number on the bottom of the grip then the number inside the crane will be the serial number.

I can see that the barrel is not pinned so if it is a model 65 it would be the 65-3. I can see the case heads so it is not counter bored.

It was manufactured after 1982 when the pinned barrel and counter bored cylinders were eliminated.

                    The cylinder should measure 1.62".

It would be so much easier to ID with the serial number and the model number which will be inside, under the yoke.

So is it for sale or what's the deal?

I'm thinking about buying it yes. Just wanted to check the model. Fairly low round count I believe. Don't know the asking price yet. Any idea what you'd consider a good deal for a gun like this calgunners? Yes it is a 357 btw.

Buy it, Mrvaudo. Keep it on a steady diet of .38 Specials with an occasional binge of .357 Magnums and it will last you a lifetime. I'd expect to pay $600 for a clean 3" Model 65. It has no lock, it's discontinued, and it's off roster...therefore I want it!

A great deal in Ca would be $500 or less. Still a deal at $600.

It could list higher in a gun shop. These revolvers are only going up in price.

Like another member already said, its a 3" model 65 made after 1982.

Its probably one of the most sought after, pre lock modern Smiths. Many (including myself) consider the 3" heavy bull barrel on a R/B, fixed sight K Frame, the ultimate carry gun.

Exterior looks great. If the internals are original and timing & lock up are spot on & there no / to little flame cutting between the forcing cone and top strap, its worth a minimum of $600 IMHO. I wouldn't worry about an original box, papers, tools, etc. (that would nice) cause that's a carry / shooting gun not a collectors piece / safe queen.

                            Buy it! Buy it now!!!

                            Good Luck!

$600 will be a good deal. Go get it OP. If not, let me know how I can get it
