Colt Python NIB - Clean or No?

Bought this today.

After taking it from the plastic bag, it appears to have some kind of oil/protectant on it, like "cosmoline light".

Difficult for me to keep from wiping it down, but should I leave it "as is" from the factory?

I don't plan to shoot it.

What say the expert collectors here?

In the last ten years, a lot of guns have become superb investments. I can't stand the thought of buying a gun that I want and then not shooting it, but a NIB Colt Python is probably going offer a better ROI than the stock market for a long time to come.

I just couldn't understand someone buying this who believes in never selling guns. The only reason to own this gun is the pile of cash you'll make on it in 20 years.

I bought a Python that was about 99% for $1200 in 2008. No box and had a small scratch on the butt of the stock.
Sold it last December before moving to Idaho for $2400.

If it's NIB, it doesn't add anything to have the original lube.

Clean and oil it. You are lucky that it hasn't already started to tarnish in places such as the hammer.
If you are going to admire it often,
place it back in the bag and in the safe. Try not keep opening and closing the box, as the flaps will eventually tear off.

Take a pic of the cylinder, it looks like a turn line. If so there is no way it's not NIB.

Have pics of the complete box? Are you familiar with Pythons to know what to look for?

Yup . Looks like a turn mark on the cylinder to me too.

Besides he took it out of the box , un-wrapped it and touched it with his hands , no longer new in box

With due respect, I would clean it up perfectly, shoot the living H@ll out of it, clean it up again and repost pictures!
Totally agree with LtJim, eternoplacer, and others who have similar views!
Beautiful gun, but it doesn't do much for you in the safe!
Nothing personal, but in most cases I believe eternoplacer said it correctly; the person inheriting this would sell it in a heartbeat!!
I do hope you enjoy it whatever you decide!

I could go on and on with the analogies. It never ceases to amaze me why a person would buy a gun and then not shoot it! It' a TOOL!!!!!! USE IT!!! ENJOY IT!!!

To fondle it, wipe it, gawk at it, show it off that you wont shoot it -- etc. is "weird" (IMHO!)

So for those that are in the camp of "shoot it", I am betting you don't spend your silver dollars...because they are just a coin, and should be used? Or pop a mint proof set out to play quarters? Yeah, thought not. Some guns are just too collectible or are so beautiful, that they are happy being fondled but never shot.

Buy a really cool picture of a Python and hang it up to look at because pictures were made to be admired and guns were made to be shot.
