Had a Glock conversation at the range this morning. Some like them and some hate them. Lol. I use Glocks in 9mm on and off duty for over 20 years . Shot plenty of matches with them too. How would rate a GLOCK in 9mm strictly as weapon ? ( not as a target gun, no cool factor ,etc) Just as a weapon. You can have any generation 9mm GLOCK ( not worried about roster) , standard and extended capacity magazines , any ammo You want. Would You pick a GLOCK?

Glock 17 and 19

Yes. I have and am about to. The simplicity and reliability seal the deal. That's what it's designed to be. The cool factor came FROM the utility as a defensive arm.Check me out on Instagram! -

There are many good things about Glocks, for one the consistency of having multiple Glocks, such as an on-duty weapon, like a G17. iI you were to carry G26 as a back-up the magazines are interchangeable and you won't have to deal with magazine compatibility issues.
Let's say you also carry a G19 as an off-duty, the magazines are still interchangeable and there is little to know learning curve as you transition from the 17, 19 and the 26.

Yes. Have been fortunate enough to own or shoot most modern handguns. Plenty of guns I like for the range more, however for any self defense use, glocks all the way (g19 in particular)Comment

Not the best range gun, not the most ergonomic gun, not my favorite gun, but it's the one I'll choose if I have to defend my life.

I agree, I would choose it too if i had to defend myself. I would rate it as one of the best weapons out there...and I don't like Glocks...lolFormally known as el Chingon...Comment

Can't compare to my modest collection of pinned and recessed Smiths, but the Glock 19 is the one in the bedroom drawer.Comment

I love the glock. My gen 4 glock 17 is the pistol I shoot the best. Out of California they have perfect capacity and can always go to bigger magazines or drums. And the 9mm out of the gen 4 feels like a .380Comment

I almost switched over to the "Glocks are just okay" club, but cannot seemed to make the jump. Glock haters bring up that the ergonomic features are dated and have generally remained unchanged (getting better with gen 4 features though), awkward grip angle, law enforcement uses them primarily because they are inexpensive, yadda, yadda, yadda.
At the end of the day, glocks chambered in 9mm are difficult for me pass up. Super reliable (check out the torture test Larry Vickers put them through), plentiful after market add ons, most lgs will have holsters for a g26, g19, mag compatibility btwn subcompact, compact and full size pistols. But most importantly, Tommy Lee Jones used one in The Fugitive Part 2!!!Comment

I've got to agree with the others, for the range I prefer others, but for SD, I go with G-19.Comment

Pros:
I love the minimalism and simplicity of the basic Glock design. Nothing extraneous to worry about in use, and it's so easy to disassemble and work on most anything yourself;
Tons of choices in parts and accessories;
If you get a good one, they're rock-solid reliable;
Plenty accurate enough for most purposes.
Cons:
If you don't get a good one, it can be an ordeal. I've had a couple of flawless ones, and one that couldn't get through a magazine without a failure to eject;
Those plastic dovetail protectors that come from the factory really need to be replaced with real sights;
The high-cap magazines available in other states are fine, but the 10-round ones are a pain to load the last round and there are claims of unreliability out there. Mine have been OK, but I haven't run them hard.
Overall:
While I'm personally an HK guy, I wouldn't hesitate to carry a G19 or G17 after, as with any defense pistol, I'd put 500+ trouble free rounds through it to verify reliability. I currently have a second-gen G19 which has been flawless, and if it were my only pistol I would have confidence in it.
I've seen the plastic sights break under hard use at multi-day training classes. Along with some excellent aftermarket products there is a lot of junk out there and a lot of hype, and I've seen Glocks at the range that were tricked out and having all kinds of problems; except for sights I prefer to stick with factory parts for most things. While the out of the box price is reasonable it's also a little deceptive because it's not hard to spend a bunch more on very basic upgrades.
Personally I'm fine with the somewhat boxy ergonomics, apparently I have somewhat boxy hands and a G19 fits them just fine. The grip angle can take a bit of getting used to but then it's fine.
Almost any pistol is fine for occasional plinking. For a defensive weapon that absolutely must work every time and potentially endure heavy use under tough conditions, the list is a whole lot shorter. The G19 and G17 are certainly on that list, and after that a lot of the choice comes down to personal preference. Glocks are ugly soul-less pieces of plastic, but they're very efficient ugly soul-less pieces of plastic. My old revolvers are a lot prettier but they live in the safe except for range trips. My G19 is all scuffed up from use and still works.Last edited by Knomad; 07-26-2015, 11:23 PM.Comment
