    How to ship pistol?

My brother-in-law wanted me to get some answers for him. He wants to ship his pistol to have some work done on it, but the UPS Store wont allow you to ship pistols... stupid rule, and you have to go to a UPS hub, which is far away, so I was thinking he could pack it up and not tell them its a pistol and send it off. Is this illegal? I just think it would violate the companies retarded policy, and also what should he say it is so that he could also have it insured for several hundred dollars? Over $100 value and you have to state whats in the package. I guess he could say jewelry but would that screw him if he needed to make a claim?

Go to the Hub. Prison is not fun, and is full of ugly people with EVEN uglier
    visitors.

Don't ask how I know this.

I'm quite positive you'd be violating Federal law by not properly shipping this overnight and declaring it rightfully so.

You are asking advice about illegal acts. Personally, I would not commit a felony to save twenty bucks. FFl's can ship between one another USPS, which is a lot cheaper. If you have an 01 nearby you could ask him or her about it.

If you are shipping to a licensee, I don't think you are required to notify the shipper. Now, you may not be eligible for insurance from the shipper if you violate their regulations, but you have not violated FED law.

922(e) It shall be unlawful for any person knowingly to deliver or
cause to be delivered to any common or contract carrier for
transportation or shipment in interstate or foreign commerce, to
persons other than licensed importers, licensed manufacturers,
            licensed dealers, or licensed collectors
            , any package or other
container in which there is any firearm or ammunition without
written notice to the carrier that such firearm or ammunition is
being transported or shipped; except that any passenger who owns or
legally possesses a firearm or ammunition being transported aboard
any common or contract carrier for movement with the passenger in
interstate or foreign commerce may deliver said firearm or
ammunition into the custody of the pilot, captain, conductor or
operator of such common or contract carrier for the duration of the
trip without violating any of the provisions of this chapter. No
common or contract carrier shall require or cause any label, tag,
or other written notice to be placed on the outside of any package,
luggage, or other container that such package, luggage, or other
            container contains a firearm.
922(e) says that you must notify a shipper that you are shipping a firearm to a person "other than licensed importers, licensed manufacturers,
licensed dealers, or licensed collectors". If the person you are shipping to is in one of those catagories, then you have not violated 922(e) if you do not notify the shipper.

And you can't ship USPS since you are not a dealer.

Shipping from a UPS store is not illegal. It just store policy and they will not cover any damage or loss. They want you to ship overnight air and it should not be marked in any way that it is a gun. Shipping it USPS if not an FFL01 is illegal tho.

I just read this, don't know if its a credible source or not, but it makes it sound like my buddy can't ship a handgun through any shipper... so I am thinking I will just tell him to take it to the local FFL and ask them to ship it for him, that is if it won't cost an arm and or a leg.

Hmm, so the concensus here is that it could be shipped, legally, through UPS, but there would be no insurance? Hmm, I've never had a package lost or damaged by them... guess thats a choice too.

The carrier must be notified..or are you referring to the receipient..anyhow...

(B8) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier?
A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.

I don't think insurance is required but you must require a "Signature Delivery" oe whatever they want to call it.

Yeah, screw it, not worth risking jail to save some gas money, so the choices are drive to the hub or let our FFL take care of it.

If you aren't willing to go to the UPS hub and declare that you are shipping a firearm, you would be forgoing insurance since you would not have complied with UPS's regulations.
