Question about HK USP 9mm rail

Hello,

Im finally gonna buy a USP 9mm after waiting my whole life. Ive owned mags for it and never bought the gun. Anyhow, do all models of USP use a proprietary rail or can I mount a TLR1 on it without using an adapter?

I was hoping the newer models came with standard picattinny rail.

Any other things to know about the USP9 V1? I know they are reliable and great guns but anything else to know would be great.

The USP im buying is code BD, which seems it was made in 2013 I think.

All the USP models use HK's proprietary rail. It's not until HK released the P30, HK45, VP9 etc line of guns when they included the "1913" pic style rail without having to buy an adapter. In order to use the TLR1, you're going to need a rail adapter like the GG&G (what I have).

The USP9 is an amazing gun. I personally prefer the P30L because of the handgun grip and texture (USP's too large in my hand) but other swear by the USP. My USP 45 hasn't had a single hiccup and it was made in '97.

Do you know if any of light manufacturers make lights specifically for the USP because I saw on amazon they have tlr4 for HK, but I wasnt sure if it had a built
in adapter.

Also do you have a 9mm UPS as well? Most of the internet stories i read about the USP lasting thousands and thousands of rounds were all related to the 45 model. Do you know if the 9mm is as good as the 45 model?

The TLR4 (model 69242) and M2 UTL works with the USP without requiring an adapter.... I think those are the only two that work without an adapter. Could be wrong, someone correct me if I am.

I just wanted to chime in on your topic here.... My very first gun was a HK USP40 which I purchased in 1993... I sold it to my friend and it still is performing flawlessly without a single hick up... I know that the USP line was originally designed for the 40 cal. but work flawlessly with both the 9mm and 45 ACP as well.. They are built to last...

On my USP45 I went with the special version of the TLR-4 designed for the USP rail, so doesn't need an adapter. Been happy with it.

There are a few options that will work.
1) using a GG&G rail adapter with any picatinny style rail. The down side is the light sits very low almost below the trigger guard and if you use a laser unit you have to max out the height adjustment which is usable starting @ 10 yards.
2) Any TLR-3/4 will work. You don't have to buy the USP specific unit since the only difference is removing the picatinny locking bar (the USP doesn't have one). Also the whole unit is polymer which some people have stated the rails can break if it's dropped.
3) The Insight LAM (Laser Aim Module) a very unique option that was originally designed for the HK Mark 23 SOCOM pistol that was adopted by SOCOM back in the 90's
This would be the most expensive options.
4) HK made a UTL (Universal Tactical Light) for the USP that used a unique quick release clamp. The down side is that it's a incandescent light.

IMHO a weapons mounted light is ok indoors you will get a back lit sight picture. In more open spaces it will be very difficult to pick up the sights at all. If your looking to use this as a HD unit I'd recommend a laser light combo, laser with a hand held. With a hand held your able to illuminate the top of your sights to get a clear sight picture. If you've never taken a night class/shoot I strongly suggest trying it out. Your whole out look on weapons lights will change. IMHO a rifle with a red dot and a weapons mounted light is your best option for CQB. People will say a rifle is to long, but learning how to short stock and other techniques makes that point a non issue.

I wanted the light for my HD weapon. There have been several times when i needed to check my backyard and i had my 3rd Gen Smith and a handheld flashlight, i did not like holding the gun in one hand even though I can shoot with one hand.
So I got a Tlr1 and mounted it on my Glock19 and that feel perfect.

So now im getting a USP and goin to mount a light on that.


I love Love Glocks and Love 3rd Gen Smiths. I love the reliability of Glocks and ease of maintenance, I love the reliability of 3rd Gen Smiths and the decocker/safety.

The USP seems to have the best of both worlds. I get a polymer super reliable 9mm that also has a rail for a light and has the decocker/safety.


The 3rd Gen Smiths dont have rails unless you get tactical model that cost same as USP and used.
The Glock is great but it doesnt have the decocker like i prefer.


Anyhow thats the reason I think USP is perfect for me. One day when I get extra cash, perhaps I will take a class.

What is strange is that even though the Glock 19 is smaller and I shoot it well. The USP being a bigger gun fits my small hands better. It would seem that the bigger USP wouldnt fit small hands but its just the opposite with me.

YMMV, but go with the GG&G rail. I started with a cheaper one, and the screw holes got stripped by tightening, so the adapter became useless. GG&G adapter has been great.

V1 is safety and decocker mounted on LH side. I have 93' USP 9mm V1 that I converted to V9. Safety only no decocker LH side. You can buy the plate for $8 and takes 2 min to swap. This eliminates the possibility to accidentally decock on your draw stroke if you carry cocked and locked. Cool gun and built like a tank

SuperMario, you should not be scanning your backyard with a weapon mounted light. When you are doing that you are sweeping an unknown area, (possibly filled with friendlies) with a weapon. Even with a weapon light, you still needed a handheld to scan. If you see something, switch to the weapon light.
