    It sounds like the problem is narrowed down to ammo related. Good job on testing and paying attention to failures/conditions, targets are good, too.

    I'd say 10 yards is the 'standard.' I prefer 15 - 20 yards because I'm shooting small steel plates. My target has gotten beat up, so even at that distance I've been hit a few times by pieces of lead/junk.

    They say aim small, miss small, so when shooting paper my favorite are the sheets with lots of small targets on it. It doesn't mean I hit them, but it makes you work.

      Whats the "standard" distance for handguns?

      Probably debatable but practice from 5yd ---> 7yd --->10yd ---15yd. Then I finish off at 20yd ---> 40yd once in a while.

      Are you getting hit from 10yd to 20yd? I have some metal targets (3" & 4") that swing too but haven't use them yet.

      That is so true, somehow your groupings get tighter with smaller targets.

        Yep, it's a cheap caldwell steel pistol target, dang thing has been hit a lot with 9/40/45 and has gotten fairly cratered.

        I'm shooting at 18 yards and have been hit with debris several times, first time right in the forehead and I didn't have my eye protection on. (Lesson learned!)

        It doesn't hurt, feels like a bug hitting your face when riding a motorcycle.

        Now I bring clear eye pro for when it's difficult to see with sunglasses, but I really need to replace my targets.

          Not sure if I have caldwell or birchwood casey but thanks for the info. At least now I know how far to set the metal targets at a minimum of 10yd.

          I always wear eye protection so I'm good in that department but will make sure not to shoot with open mouth.
