Defensive Carry: Walther PPQ M1 vs HK VP9

By David Crane david (at) defensereview (dot) com April 28, 2015 Last updated on 4/29/15. Speaking of polymer-frame, striker-fired combat/tactical 9mm (9mm Parabellum/9x19mm NATO) pistols, DefenseReview (DR) was curious to know how the Walther PPQ M1 Classic and Heckler & Koch HK VP9 high-capacity polymer-frame, striker-fired pistols stack up against each other, so we asked our friend Dave Pavlick of Arsenal Democracy (AD) about it, since AD 1) has experience building customized combat/tactical pistols for military Special Operations Forces (SOF) missions, and 2) has some shooting experience with both pistols, AND has conducted some forensic examination on them. DR's goal with this article is to leverage AD's pistol building expertise and specific knowledge of the two pistols in question (Walther PPQ and HK VP9) to create a detailed analysis that can be used as an educational guide and resource by anyone considering purchasing one or the other (or both). …

Some notes I thought funny since some people have strong opinions about "manufacturing quality" on the HK side.

"more welds are visible on the VP9. The locking block area of the VP9 is clearly stamped and welded at the seams. The PPQ uses a solid, one piece machined locking block for their system.”

These were my observations as well months ago, though some people tried to argue that the VP9 locking block was not stamped.

Damn .45. I thought I saw the end of the VP9 vs. PPQ threads when SSE ended.

I figured you would be the one to revive the "debates".

Meh, love my VP9 all the same. Never shot a PPQ so the debate over which is better means nothing to me. Carry on....

I picked up a VP9 last year and enjoy shooting it but my carry guns are a PPS or a P99AS.

Love the PPQ. But love the VP9 just a little more. YMMV

                You know me!

Besides, this place seems super dead lately. What is it, no one likes handguns in California anymore?

I've always said I felt the VP9 felt a little "cheaper" than the PPQ. I remember getting into this debate with a few fellow bros on here (Calif 15-22, where are you bro?!!). The VP9 for the most part is stamped parts with spot welds. The PPQ is cut from a single solid piece of metal. I know which one I'd rather have.

Now put the VP9 and the PPQ next to a $649 P2000, and those first two will feel cheap. I had a VP9, I didn't have any real complaints... and I had a P99AS.. wish that I could have that one back... minus the plastic sights.

I actually think the VP9 is a decent handgun, not great, but decent. I think with SSE last year, people bought into the hype about an affordable sub-$800 HK handgun, and the hype trained ran with it. The fanboy comments were getting out of hand.

I actually had a VP9 non-LE, and a PPQ M2. Shot them both side by side, and knew immediately which one I wanted to keep. Sold the VP9 for $200 over what I bought it for though, so thank you hype train!

Hmmm... Kinda sounds like my HK91/93's...and they will out perform last any of their competitors in any combat torture testing. I am willing to bet that the VP 9 polygonal barrel will substantially out perform and out last the std. land and groove barrel of the PPQ..... Just sayn..

Lazy day... Bored at home. For the record I do own a pair of the P99's (9mm and .40) in addition to five VP9's.

I bought the VP9 last year .... Sold It within a month!

Bought the PPQ right after .... Never Looked Back!!!

The PPQ is my go to gun and FAR Superior in "my opinion" to the VP9

The Walther is my most accurate and best feeling and shooting gun I own.

The VP9 was okay ... but in no way lived up to the hype.

It really all came down to trigger and overall accuracy for me in the end along with feel and overall comfortable quality to me.
The VP9 trigger to me was bad ... and compared to the PPQ was pure junk.

Anyway ... I know Many guys that love the VP9 and shoot like a champ with them ...But I 100% agree with this article ... it is Spot On !!!
