yes all P38s are C&R and therefore exempt from the roster. Feel free to buy from another state and have it shipped to your FFL.

Yes, they're C&R. WHile you're saving up, you might as well get a C&R license ($30) and buy it in some other state yourself and bring it to CA. That way you'll pick exactly the one you want, and it will likely be cheaper too. Found mine for $450 in AZ a couple of years ago.

You don't need a c and r license, it just helps in terms of less hoops to jump through in order to get the one you desire.

You don't need a C&R license, it just allows you to purchase a C&R gun out of state. It is a federal license. If you have you one and happen to be out of CA then you can hand pick the gun and bring it home. Then send the state $19 for registration. You will save shipping, Ffl receiving costs, and $10 on DROS fees.

Consider a reinforced P1, unless you can find a war time P38 with a steel frame. Also best to stick to standard loads as hot loads can wear them out. http://mausersandmuffins.blogspot.co...f-history.html

Check Royal Tiger as they sent me an e-mail last week saying they had some for sale again. I have an unissued German police P01 from them, nice gun. It was built in '64 so it is also C&R.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

The P1 was classified the same as a P38 and are all C&R and roster exempt. My P1 was built in '82.[emoji89]

                    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

While I know you did not ask for general P-38 information. Click on the above link, you may find it interesting.

I wasn't aware of that. I thought that in order to be C&R it had to be at least 50 years old. Thanks for the info.

                          You're welcome.

As for C&R status there are 3 ways:

                          50 years old

                          Be listed by BATF

By having their value because they are rare, unique or associated with a particular historical figure or event.

There are many guns less than 50 years old that can and do fall under the other 2 rules.

I have always liked the P-1 / P-38 pistols but never got one, yet. Thanks everyone for the good information and the OP for starting the thread.

Oh that explains it. I might just visit one or few gun shows when I go to Vegas this year. You guys have been very helpful. Thank you!
