    Springfield XD Questions

    Hey Yall,
Just joined the forum and wanted to ask some questions. For my first handgun im strongly considering a Springfield XD. The reviews and prices ive seen are hard to look past, and ive heard they are an extremely well built and reliable handgun. Im also a southpaw, so the ambi mag release is a bonus. But I just wanted to ask what anyone else knows about them. Also, I was wondering how concealable any of you CCW holders find the XD service pistol with a 4" barrel, as I am interested in possibly getting my CCW in the future. Any help is appreciated!!!

I have a Springfield XD 45, the 5" tactical model, and I really like it. I've had it for about 3 years and never had a single misfire. Granted I've only shot a few hundred rounds through it, probably 400-500. It's pretty accurate, though the stock trigger could definitely stand to be worked for a lighter pull. It's also super quick to strip and clean. If you do plan to get one for concealed carry, definitely don't get the 5" model, it's way too big. I was thinking about putting it on my CCW license for cold weather carry when I'm wearing a lot of clothes, but it really is a big gun and IMO too big even for heavy clothes. The 4" model should serve you well as a carry gun. You won't be disappointed with the performance, I can vouch for that.

If you havent yet, do some research on the problems with the striker retaining pin. otherwise they are good guns
The grip is kinda long for conceal carry. A glock 19 gives you the same barrel length with a shorter grip. easier to conceal. would probably cost you an extra $50 or so though.

Great guns, I have a XD9 Tactical that I love. For CCW it's kinda dependant on your body type. I'd at least try a subcompact first and see if you can shoot it.

Having a pistol that is nice to shoot sometimes is different than a pistol that is nice to carry. I have 4 various XD and I really like them. They are a plastic pistol.

I shot a XD40. Similar to my Glock 17 in height. For CCW I'd look at the 4" compact service in .45 or the 3" sub compact in 9mm/.40.

i am a sig guy, but love my XDs as well. First was an XDs in 45, and have since gotten a XD9 Tactical and XD9 subcompact. Also had an XD40 subcompact but sold it to fund a sig

I love the price, and they are my favorits amongst the poly guns. Great controls, easy takedown, grip safety is peace of mind. They point perfectly for me, and they are accurate. My XDs is a tack driver for a little 3.3" bbl.

Buy one and don't look back. At the price point, I suggest going with one of the packages they offer that include all the extras... i forget what they are called, like service or essentials or something

I have the XD 45 Tactical. It is a great gun, but IMHO to big (wide) to conceal well. I would level the same critique of any double stack poly auto though.

It is on my permit, but I have never carried it concealed on a regular basis.

From the price, performance, reliability standpoint, mine has been great, but I over lubed it early on and gummed up the striker channel pretty bad. Had to tear it down and sonic clean it. If you go with the Springer, keep your gun lube usage to a minimum, especially oil where it might find it's way into the striker mechanism.

I have done a Springer Precision trigger job on it, and have added a Crimson Trace laser sight. Both good additions for me. The frame has a rail, so you can add a light or whatever else strikes your fancy.

You can hardly go wrong with this thing. Go for it. It is an excellent choice for a first auto.

Welcome to the forum, you sound like me. I joined up about a month ago for some advice on the Glock 19 vs SA Xd vs Sig 2022. Great guidance here and at 2 gun shops.

After trying all three, I didn't like the action on the Sig and couldn't stand the grip on the Glock. I settled on the XD9 5". Only put about 200 rounds through it so far but I am VERY pleased with my choice.

I've got four XD-45's: 1x Tactical, 1x Service and 2x Compacts. I've put thousands of rounds through my Service and any misfires (very few) were due to bad ammo (or limp wristing) ... not the gun. The XD is well-made and shoots straight right out of the box.

The Compact has a shorter grip (which presumably is good for CCW). Compacts come with short magazines, but standard magazines will fit; you can add a plastic sleeve to the bottom for better ergonomics. Below are a couple of pics of my Compacts; second pic show a compact mag and a standard mag with a sleeve.

The Compact (and Sub-compact) 9MM's are even smaller ... might be a better option for CCW.

                      XD is a solid choice... I have 3 XDs, all 9mm, 2x 4" Service and 1x 3" Subcompact...

I probably have about 7000 rounds though my first XD, and probably about 10k combined.

Only issue worth reporting on is I did have to change my striker retaining pin once, and that was due to a LOT of dry fire practice when I first got it.

Clean or dirty they just work, I don't really maintain anything with any regularity...

If it feels good in your hand, and points naturally, then you should give it further consideration. Icing on the cake for me is that I shoot it well, very well.

I've had the XD 9, 40, and 45 service models. They were all tough, great shooting and reliable pistols with awesome pricing. I am also a southpaw so the features worked well for me. Can't help you on the carry part but, these pistols are heavier than some of the other brands. Good luck.

If it is a CCW gun you are looking for you may want to check out the XDs. There are some for sale (ppt) in the Marketplace forum. I have an XD tactical .45 on my CCW btw, doesn't need to be small to conceal in the vehicle. Like others say you should try em all at the range and see what works for you. I couldn't get the Glock to work for me but that doesn't mean the XD is any better than Glock and vice versa.
