I had the exact same issue after a few range sessions and was convinced the sights were off. Then I had someone else who is a much better shot than me shoot it and they were right on target.
The morale of the story is its probably you. I found I had to adjust my grip and I became a better shot with it but it took a few trips to the range.
I also got the Pearce grip extensions for the 7 round magazine which made a huge difference.

When I first got mine it was low and left. Now that I've shot it 500+ times it's right on. I needed to learn the trigger.

Jeff and funk, those would be the obvious culprits and I am doing my best to rule them out My next venture is too try compensating with the sites rather than the target to see if that makes any difference. What the both of you mentioned are the most logical reasons for being off target. I will let you know if my adjustments make any difference. Another thing I have considered is the sites being too small for my wearied eyes.

Low and left is usually jerking when firing. I saw a drill I've tried it and it will tell you if you are jerking. Run your target out 20-25 yards. Load one round in the mag, rack the slide and make the gun live, drop the mag. Fire your live round, then dry fire without dropping your aim. Doing this will show if you are jerking from anticipation. First time I did that I jerked like crazy in anticipation. Good luck, I love mine.

James has done tons of slides for me and he's the only person I trust to install TFO's correctly on an XD pistol.

IMO the stock sights on the XDS were very easy to pick up. it was my first experience with FO sights, and i was impressed. i think the only set of sights that would be even easier to pick up would be trijicon HD night sights. i run those on my XD service pistols and highly recommend them. blazingly fast sight picture to pick up, at the cost of less accuracy at long distances.

If you go to the xd talk forum and then go to the xds sub forum, there's several threads on the "learning curve" of the xds. It's a small pistol, has a...quirky trigger, with sharp recoil. Lefties shoot low and right, righties shoot low and left for reasons that HopetonBrown addressed.
Shoot it more and you'll work it out.

I couldn't shoot my stock XDS trigger for crap.

I added the PRP sear and springs (stock striker spring), and what do you know? Shoots perfectly straight and turns in a tight group for a compact.

The small-ness of the grip coupled with the jerky break of the OEM trigger was pulling my shots slightly to the right- good enough for combat, but enough to bother me.
