For the first time after several thousand rounds, my ria .45 was going FTE on me like every 3 rounds. After coming home to inspect I noticed the extractor wiggles .... It is loose could this be a big issue? Time to have a smithy put a new one in ?

1911 Fte extractor

You may not need to change it out. Check the extractor tension and add tension if it needs more. Should be an easy fix. Google "how to check and adjust 1911 extractor tension" and it should provide you with all the info you need. There's tons of info out there on how to do this. -
Wiggling is not good. Here is a quick look at tuning a 1911 extractor. Not familiar with RIA guns myself. Quality extractor is made of spring steel and heat treated. If yours has mould lines on it, it is made of MIM and I would replace it.

Have you been feeding rounds through a magazine, or have you dropped a couple of rounds straight into the chamber and slammed the slide home into battery? The wise man said just find your place

Call RIA CS, they will take care of you, great CS. Or fix it yourself if you are handy, everything you need to know is posted before me.When asked what qualities he most valued in his generals, Napoleon said, "give me lucky ones."Comment

The Wilson extractor isn't necessarily a drop-in part. I realize that you put drop-in in quotes but he'll likely need an EGW oversized firing pin stop fitted to the slide and the Wilson extractor fitted to the firing pin stop to prevent any wiggling or clocking.Last edited by AeroEngi; 05-09-2015, 11:13 AM.Comment

/thread.Originally posted by HopetonBrownRemove extractor. Stick it in backwards, to the hook portion is out of the gun. Use your frame to bend the extractor inwards. Flip it around and reinsert. Check tension with a live round in the slide, no frame."Show me a hero and I'll write you a tragedy."

That's what causes the extractor to get bent. When it snaps over the rim forcibly from having dropped the slide onto a chambered round. When a round is chambered from the magazine via the normal route, the rim is slid up underneath the extractor into place."Show me a hero and I'll write you a tragedy."

So...pull your extractor, do what HB said, put it back, and NEVER DO THAT AGAIN."Show me a hero and I'll write you a tragedy."

That's a big no-no for 1911s with the traditional internal extractors. External extractors can stand up a bit to straight loading into the chamber, until the extractor edge wears out. You can re-tension the extractor but make sure the hook is still good. The wise man said just find your place
