    Black rear sights

For a carry gun, how do you guys like the plain black rear sight with a night or fiber sight on the front? I am looking into a set to replace my TFOs.

I prefer a blacked out rear sight on a target or comp gun for mostly daytime shooting. All my carry guns have 3 dot tritium night sights for those evening encounters.

For point shooting (7 yards or closer) it's OK. However, any kind aimed fire with a pistol needs IMO some type of rear sighting reference to align the gun. Because of a pistols short sight radius misalignment can easily result in off target shots.

I think the two dot system works the best for me, it's quicker than the three dot but there's a bit more reference.

Fiber sights are really hard to see in low light

Black front and rear sights for target/range/training/match guns. Simple three dot green night sights for carry guns only.

"Focus on the clear TIP of the front sight"! Not the dot on the front sight. There is a reason that U.S. Marines when qualifying on the M16 at 500 meters us black iron sights and use carbon smudge pots to make those sights blacker and more flat matte in appreance.

Honest question; does it make sense to train on one system and carry the other?

It makes most sense to train with what you carry first, before anything else, for obvious reasons - carrying is when you may need your best skills.

However, I suppose that with plenty of training, you can have multiple skills using multiple weapons and be quite comfortable with anything that you pick up, whether that's for target shooting, competition or carrying.

It's just really important that your Carry Skills and Equipment are "fresh" to you - you don't let it go stale by focusing on something else for a long time.

Simple example - you carry weapon is HK, you spent 5 years mastering it. You bought a new Glock and spent the next year trying to master that while you ignored your HK. Because you recently ignored your Carry weapon for so long, ... it will feel like a new gun at the time you may need it the most.

So it's probably ok to practice with multiple equipment, but always keep the carry skills fresh. Make sense?

That was what I was thinking too, it doesn't make sense to train your eye to use one sight picture at the range then surprise it with a different one when you actually need to use your weapon.

I found that I shoot better with a luminous (front sight only) for my LTC pistols. Front sight focus.
XS big dots work well for me. They have been rugged enough too.
Fiber optic type sight is IMO not as rugged.
I'm indifferent to weather the rear sight has an outline, dots etc..

Trijicon is finally making night sights with no outline

So you can get the white circles, red circles or no circles.

The express big dots work great up close and in low light.

If you need your sights to glow to see them, you probably won't be able to identify your target without the aid of white light. If you use white light, you can see your sights.

We do 99.99% of our shooting in the daylight/light, but for some reason I see a lot of guys using 3 dot night sights which don't aid in fast sight acquisition like a front fiber/bead does paired with a black rear.
                        THIS.

If you haven't taken a low-light shooting class, you really should... self-illuminated sights are of limited value in the real world.

Ameriglo Hacks or i-Dot Pro setups are great, imho... I just wish they were an option on all my guns.

my carry gun is blacked out rears with red fiber optic. My nightstand gun has night sights and a handheld flashlight by it.

target acquisition is much faster for me with my carry set up, no matter the lighting.
                            Have a good day!
