As said above, the only difference is the magazine release and the magazines.

The M1 is cool, but the muscle training in a defense situation is something that I think is a real issue. Keep your controls standard across your guns when you can. I vote M2.

I have played with the M1, and it is really cool, but it would be a toy to me, for the reason above.

I'm also slightly concerned that the mag release on the M1 might break, but I haven't heard of anyone actually breaking it. Hopefully age doesn't make the plastic brittle.

Would go M1 if can find one in CA. Mag release on M2 has annoying bulge/lip that interfers with my fingers whereas the M1 is smooth, my hands like that more.

I bought an M1. I love it. The mag release is perfect.

M1 for sure. But I like levers, so that's what I got. I actually like the gen 1 p99 levers even better, as they are more HK like.

There is an M2 4" in marketplace now. L.A./OC area. I have the button mag release and it does not bother me. It is big and angled in such a way that I do not need to shift my grip to release the mag.

Bought the M1 on a whim. All mag. releases should be built like that. Wish my Wilson Combat had one. Soooo quick and easy to use. No turning/rotating the gun. Approx. $40 a mag.

I have an M2, I don't mind the mag release.

I prefer being able to practice dropping mags like I do on most of my other handguns. I only have a couple with the lever style release.

I also don't need to change my grip to drop a mag, but I do have longer fingers and thumbs than most....

I have the M1 PPQ and my buddy has the M2 PPQ. I have tried both and I would say M1 all the way...simple and quick to release the mag and reload. I just use my middle finger to release the mag while still maintaining my target point of view.

I like the M1 better too. Their magazines were much easier to find. For me anyway. I believe the P99 and SW99 magazines are interchangeable.

The only issue I've ever had with the M1 was that my thumb would engage the slide release while shooting. I had to adjust my grip a little bit, but I eventually got it. That slide release is pretty darn long.

I didn't like the way the M2 felt in my hand, but I've heard the opposite as well. You'll just have to go hold both of them and see what you like better. Magazine release differences and all...

M1. It was engineered to be a paddle release and the button style was a response to the US market that was simply used to a button. Plus I quite am used to paddles with my HK's. Having multiple pistol options for PPQ mags is huge in my book since mags are a consumable second only to ammo and are a vital part of the semi-automatic system. Plus in order to get the button style to work on either side on the M2, Walther has to cut notches into the mag body which just means more holes for dirt/grime to get in.

I'd have considered the m1 but I bought the 5" first and is is only m2. So when I bought a 4 inch it would have been dumb to get an m1 .. Though if I did,I could have swapped uppers to make a 5 inch m1.

I prefer the M1. First, it uses cheaper and more plentiful P99 magazines.

Second, the mag release "lever" on the M1 doesn't have the extra "shelf" Walther had to install on the M2 to shield the mag release button from accidental presses. The "shelf" extends to both sides of the M2 grip and will cut into your strong hand webbing between your trigger and middle finger. The M1 doesn't have this "shelf" and thus has better grip ergonomics, imo.
