    Consignment or Private Party?

I decided I am probably going to sell a few handguns; anyone have any advice regarding consignment versus private party sales - is the ease of consignment worth the $$ you might lose paying the consignment fee?

Also, if anyone has any advice on a dealer for consignment, I'd appreciate that as well. I'm leaning towards consignment since I could take them all down there at once, sign the paperwork, and forget about it. My schedule isn't all that flexible if people want to start scheduling appointments to see the guns - which I would do if I was buying a used gun.

    Thanks in advance!

You've pretty much answered your question. PPT will net you more cash but it takes more effort. On a $500 sale, you will typically pay 20% or $100; what's your time worth?

People don't schedule appointments to "see" guns, they schedule appointments to buy guns. I've bought and sold several guns through Calguns via PPT. In every case I have met somebody at a FFL and completed the deal right then. A price was agreed upon, subject to inspection, before going to the FFL.
Check back later for a witty comment.

I've never not bought a firearm or ammo when meeting up with someone from calguns. I think most people are the same way, have pictures of the guns from a variety of angles. You'll discuss through email and answer questions. You'll get more money this way. You can ways post everything and see what happens, but consignment you'll lose out, although some of the consignment prices I've seen at a local shop are insane, not sure who set the price or who would pay it.

And if you have a bunch of used guns, you may find someone willing to buy all. 1 per 30 days only applies to new I believe.

That part in bold needs to be reiterated as the rule; and not even as an exception.

Post enough good, detailed photos with an honest description in your sale post and you should have no worries of a "look-see/tire-kicking" meeting.

if your gun is desirable and the price is reasonable, they will come. as the seller that's offering a gun that will be sold via PPT, you can state your conditions for meeting time and place with a prospective buyer. if buyer can't meet during times you are available, there are other buyers.

PPT is the way to go if you want to get more cash and deal with all the hassles of low ballers and no shows. My Ruger SP101 I sold here and made a decent amount on it, just took me a little while to actually find someone who was worth the time, where as my Savage MKII I had consigned at my LGS, and recently sold. I made less that I could've on it, but man was it nice not having to deal with the hassle of selling it. Just one day I got a call from the owner of the shop saying "hey I got some money for you whenever you can swing by here"

I agree with everyone PPT is the way to go.
Consignment is for people who don't really need the extra hundred dollars per gun, are so busy they can't take the time out to meet people or can't handle the hassles that sometimes come along with meeting different people to do business.

If you take good photos of the guns, and price them well, you will likely have people buy more than one at a time and you will make more than you would on consignment.

Keep in mind that a ppt sale will put cash in your pocket today, while consignment will create a delay of 6 weeks minimum, due to the 30 day hold, and the fact that you won't get paid until after the gun is paid in full and it leaves the shop after the 10 day wait (which could be up to 30 days).

Also keep in mind that you are limited to 5 sales transactions per year (each transaction could be 1 or 50 guns).

                      Except in LA city.
1 in 30 for all handgun transactions.
(They got me once because I knew the normal rules for PPT, not the LA LA version.)

Depends, do you want 75% of your money, or 100%?

You could price it 10% lower than market price for a quick sale and still come out ahead.

All - thanks! I've sold many motorcycles but no guns and have never bought a used gun myself except from friends - I made a bad assumption about making appointments, I guess.

Any recommendations for an FFL in San Diego for the transaction? I have heard some are less enthusiastic than others about handling PPT.

Like others, I have also bought/sold some firearms here on Calguns. I should mention, i have never backed out, nor has any buyer backed out of a deal. Most everyone here is pretty cool and as long as the item is as stated you should be fine.

So... how many pm's did you get? Rotfl. The bad is, i think you can only have 5 seller/dros a year?

Good luck. There are probably alot of eyes on this thread.
